I'm sorry, Jess. If you like the series, I don't want to offend you. Personally, I just didn't think the writing was worthy of the hype it generated. Everybody likes to read different things, though. If you enjoy it, don't let anybody else's opinions on Twilight dissuade you.

Just like Stephen King. He's not a great writer at all, but he's an excellent story teller. His books are far from literary works of art but the stories draw you in and keep you coming back for more.

I'm glad somebody else has this opinion of Stephen King. I've felt the same way for years. The Stand and the entire Dark Tower series are some of my favorite books. It is, however, because of the story being told. The writing itself cannot even come close to standing up to other authors I love.

As for Stephenie Meyer, author of Twilight, she is not a poor writer. I read The Host, and found myself shocked and impressed by not only her ability to tell a hell of a story, but also the way in which she weaves her words to do so. The woman can write. It is just my opinion that Twilight was not a good story in the first place, and it doesn't matter how well somebody writes, if the story isn't there, the book will not be good.

It gives me terrible nightmares. Every time I pick it up, I know I won't sleep for a week, but I can never stop myself. I've probably read that book 10-15 times since I was twelve or so.

On the subject of writers who are better storytellers than writers, anyone ever read Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson? It's extremely tongue-in-cheek (the main character is a pizza delivery guy/hacker with the name Hiro Protagonist). The author said it was originally going to be a graphic novel but worked better as he wrote it. I'm not a big fan of cyberpunk, but this one took that form to absurd but very readable levels.

I've not read it myself, but my friend has been trying to get me to for years. He quotes that book all the time.

Oh, I don't even want to discuss IT. If I even think about it too much, I have to shower with the bathroom door open. Anybody can say anything they want about Stephen King, but the man sure knows how to take something simple and innocent and scare the hell out of a little kid with it.
