I go on vacation???

lol - i just let him do his thing in the yard. he really can stay outside even in the winter. it's just that it was cold out with the snow so I brought him in. it barely gets below 40 here.

I built him a little closet type thing in my outdoor utility room which has heaters and a light in it - he goes in and out of there at his leisure during the winter...i posted pictures in another thread....

I really love him, and he really is very cool. He was walking around looking at everything like a toddler would.

When he feels really comfortable he will fall asleep hanging out his shell. I used to think he had died when I came across him like that. Tortoise playing opossum.

He sounds like a treasure.

Can he be paper trained?

no. but he really doesn't usually poop unless he eats something first. It's a desert animal thing - like they won't expel water or excess until they have something to replace it with.

Of course i fed him only one tiny sprig of aloe and he pooped for an hour so... :willy_nilly:

our turtles are kept in a tank. I guess yours is too big to be in one?

you have a turtle jessica which eats meat and can swim

i have a tortoise which does not eat meat and cannot swim

there's a difference. my biggest fear is that percy will get lost and some coonass will either cook him or dump him in the bayou.

;)

Now that, I'm afraid, is just nasty business. No can do that. I have enough trouble with the cat's litter box. He can lay some very pungent logs at times. :willy_nilly:

Can you write his name and address on his shell in case he does wander off someday? I'm thinking a collar just might not do it with the head in and out all the time business.....

are they hard to take care of?

hey mee...read the other posts in this thread.

I am not trying to be rude or dismiss you at all, it's just i don't want to be repetitive.

for entertainment or for knowledge go read that thing i posted on harpo the tort - it's a long read but very worth it even if you aren't into torts.

lol! Percy smells worse than a grown man. but his poop consists of all grass. and it is hard so it doesn't leave a trail....

i used to keep him in a box when he came inside, but he would still poop and it would still smell bad enough that i would have to clean it up right away and he would try to get out of the box the ENTIRE time he was in it. they are very hard headed.
