Looks like google is going to attempt to make a operating system targeted towards those that spend most of the time on the web. From what I read it will be Linux based and first released for netbooks, so I imagine it will host it's current web based app suite.
 
Google vs Microsoft? I have trouble imagining a Linux distro competing with Windows 7, particularly if its going to be designed for netbooks. Unless this Linux distro suddenly gets 100% compatibility Windows software and games, I doubt that will happen. I only avoid Linux because basically all the software is from small time developers making apps at home, with the odd company throwing in support.

Your points for not using Linux (or other alternatives) are not surprising, although I'd not be caught saying such things.

Windows compatibility just does not exist, unless it is through an outsider standard or format that's taken the world by storm, and Microsoft has to play catch up; or unless Microsoft uses it's clout to do something (exFAT is currently slated to be the official FS of the new SDXC cards, a Microsoft-proprietary format -- not entirely unexpected, as the FAT32 (not sure if FAT12|16 was used for early cards) was used for the SD|HC cards.

Your second point is absolutely bogus.

I can mention one company (besides Microsoft, Apple, Novell, IBM, et cetera) that has thrown some development behind some project or offshoot of a Linux|Unix system or program, and destroy that "odd company' moniker -- DELL.

Before making claims, research. :)

While your looking up the information I alluded to, you can also look up WINE or MONO.

Google does not need 'backing'. It's big enough.

However, you probably meant "have agreed to use a flavor or edition of Google's potential system".

Ok, maybe I was being a little biased there. Being a Linux user for only a few hours doesn't really entitle me to make such big (and ill-researched for that matter) claims, granted.

Ugghhh, WINE is just so gross. It runs everything slower (no surprise) and it often has trouble with a lot of my software. Personally I don't think a 3rd party compatibility layer is enough for me to trash Windows.

What do you realistically expect, though?

Microsoft keeps the vital compatibility design specifications locked in someone's locker that they don't even have access to.
