TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP)—Seven fans sustained minor injuries after being struck by flying debris when Carl Edwards’ car went airborne into the safety fence on the final lap of the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday. Track medical director Bobby Lewis said none of the injuries was life-threatening but two women were airlifted to Birmingham hospitals. Lewis said one, who was taken to UAB Hospital, likely had a broken jaw and also had a cut on her mouth. The other was transported to Brookwood Hospital because of an unspecified medical condition but was not hurt.

I agree with what Edward's said after the race. With NASCAR not allowing them to go below the yellow lines, it boxes them in and makes things a lot more dangerous. But thankfully, that fence held or his car would have been in the crowd and we'd be hearing a much sadder story.

The roof flaps would have brought him back to the ground if he hadn't landed on Ryan Newman. I love the fact that he ran across the finish line.

Tells you the mentality of individuals... If they hadn't let them down in an area that was dangerous they wouldn't have been hurt.

You do not watch racing much I bet. And for sure you have never been to a super speedway.

I have been to Michigan Speedway and I assume it has a similar layout based on the looks as Talledega.

Those fans are not as close as it looks. There is about a 15' to 20' empty space between the wall and their seats. Plus they are way up above the top of the race track. TV makes it very deceiving.

That wreck is a fluke for that car to get that air born at the top of the track.

The answer is to remove the restrictor plates. That would eliminate the bunching up. Letting them drop below the yellow is no answer and is also dangerous as the track is almost flat at that point.

that was pretty cool! You would have thought by seeing the looks of his car that he would have been injured badly. I think my heart stopped as he was crashing

I was more worried about the crash before when the guy hit the inside wall. I forget who it was but that gut hit the wall hard.

Pretty amazing that fence held up when Edwards hit it. I don't recall ever seeing a car get that airborn on the high side of the track before. Plus who ever he hit that catapaulted him is lucky

It was a good one. I could not believe how quick Edwards and the winner came up from behind to catch Earnhardt and who he was with that were leading.

Atleast I can go catch highlights of the race.

The sad thing is I knew the Talladega race was yesterday, but we have a movie day in my house so I just didn't get to see it.

I sat row 12 at Daytona for the Pepsi 400 the first year we went. Row 12 makes is sound like you're close to the track but you are really far away. You do get the sound and the dust from the track though. I agree about removing the plates but I think giving them some wiggle room on the bottom would be a good idea.

I want whoever makes that fence to make one for our backyard. Dominic would never be able to get out of it. He hit Ryan Newman. I was really surprised he was able to finish after hitting Edwards and then hitting the wall.

Didn't they put those ON due to the same wreck at the same track at the same part of the stands 22 years ago?

Bobby Allison?

I'm not an auto racing fan, but I read enough news to know that's why they are there, the Bobby Allison wreck.

I'm not a physicist either, but wouldn't eliminating the banking slow the cars down quite a bit?

Yes they were put on after Allisons wreck. That wreck was due to a flat tire and not due to being hit like Edwards accident. If they would have had roof flaps back then Allison would not have had near the accident and would have walked away from it

Yes lowering the banking would slow them down in the turns.

These tracks have long straightaways. You take out the banking you still will have them going fast. The problem is not speed so much as cars bunched up. In this case if Newmans car was not there Edwards car would not have catapulted.

They need to downsize the engines and remove the plates. That will allow for better acceleration and drafting like the old days.

Downsize to what? I mean, what speed do you need to stay below? With the aero packages, these cars are wings anyhow, from what I understand.

I guess I should ask it, would fans still show up if they were doing 150? And do you think that speed would keep them on the ground?

I've seen the video for both, and they are pretty identical for being that far apart. From what I've read, this track has a history of cars getting airborne. Also from what I've read (again, I want to stress that this is NOT my 'thing', but my ex was big into it, and I picked up some here and there. You want to talk wine, we can talk wine. :) ), this is pretty much a track specific phenomenon. I don't think (but I'm not sure) that Daytono (sp?) has had anyone up in the fence before.
