Get ready to say goodbye to one of the most polarizing and controversial cars to ever hit the road. General Motors (GM) has been desperately shopping its Hummer brand around, but as weeks tick by with no clear buyer it's looking like Hummer production will soon end.

GM has said it would decide by next month whether to kill the Hummer line. But that could happen as early as next week, according to the Financial Times. Hummer's heyday was in 2006, when it delivered nearly 72,000 models in the U.S., but sales fell 51% last year.

Hummer would join a number of other GM models in the automotive graveyard. Saab is also for sale, and will receive bankruptcy protection in Sweden. Pontiac will become a niche brand with just one or two models. Saturn is headed for a 2011 phase-out.

It's sad to see so many names go, but GM needs to throw out the dead weight if it hopes to become a healthy, profitable company. Saturn, Hummer and Saab generated an average pretax loss of $1.1 billion a year between 2003 and 2007, according to the Globe and Mail.

GM's survival was even more in doubt Thursday, after the company said it burned through $6 billion in its fourth quarter. Quarterly sales fell by a third to about $31 billion.

GM is closing plants and cutting production, and it expects to burn through another $14 billion this year. Its bank account is pretty much shot; it ended the near with just $14 billion in cash -- including the first $4 billion in loans it received from the government.

GM has said it needs at least $11 billion to $14 billion to stay in business,

Good! It's a fucking embarassment what they've done to the ol' HMMWV. It's like dressing a pit bull in a tutu for chrissakes.

The feds are using the auto industry as scape goats. The auto industries issues pale to the bull shit the bankers and wall st. did.

meanwhile the fucking idiots in DC pad their pet projects with a massive stimulus plan.

The sad part is that by the end of this year the economy would have started to recover. This bull shit gives me a frigin headache

Saturn is trying to see if they can make it on its own.

SAAB appears to be toast as their parent country does not give a shit

Hummer should have been scrapped a couple years ago.

Trust me the auto companies have been working on reform. They get it. The fucking asshats in DC though would rather take care of their banker buddies and the god damn pork programs first. What a great way to treat an industry that is one of the main reasons we were able to tool up and win WWII

There is one problem on the short term that makes it a concern if we go to the midget cars which the feds want to cram down our throat. How do you think they would fare in a nasty collision with an SUV

Exactly what fuel mileage is unacceptable?? Is it ok for a crossover SUV to get 22 city and 27 city? Because the Nissan Rogue gets that. I was gonna buy one but with the economy and the american car makers in trouble I don't know if I can bring myself to do that although the alternative is to lose about 3 mpg to go american

The other thing is what is american anymore now that foreign car makers have plants here. Some popular GM and Ford cars and trucks are made in Canada and Mexico.

I need a fairly big car. I need one for work to haul stuff that will never fit in a trunk. My wife needs something large enough to haul my daughters bass. Even our HHR you would have trouble fitting more than two people in the front with the bass in the back.

There is more to it than just ridding the fleets of large vehicles. The stupidity is when you basically the same vehicles in different names. GM has the same basic SUV's in Chevy and GM brands. Same with Chrysler and Dodge.

The same goes with different model cars. They slap a different name on way too many cars that are basically the same thing.

I have heard nothing about stopping it. It would be a stupid decision if they did. They were being highly anticipated.

A good example of stupidity is Dodge having a Challenger and a Charger. They are too similar to each other.

Same would be if Pontiac reintroduced the Firebird with Chevy having the Camaro.

ones a 4 door sedan, and the other is 2 door badass looking machine.

but GM and chysler are so good at doing that.

even nissan and infinity as well. same car. very little cosmetic changes.

most of them do it but not as bad as GM.

trail blazer-envoy-saab 9-7 X-bravada-rainer same freaking suv but different badges

That's all very well but how a Hummer could be practical for anyone not about to use it in war is beyond me. You dont have to buy a tiddly car either just to be economical and caring about the environment, there are plenty of big cars around which are both.

people may not need the hummers but most people who have them can afford them. and they pimp them out. big rims, more lights, tint, sterio system, ect.

i see them at the car shows.

Whatever apeals to you if you can afford it, I guess. Personally if I was rich, I wouldn't get a Hummer. The're one of the ugliest vehicles I've seen and not much good if you live in Britain, you'd never get them down half our roads!:willy_nilly:
