Have a question for the hardcore WoWers -- what's the best character to have?

I like my hunter because of the pet. He keeps the bad guys busy and I can just stand back and fire arrows into it. :D

Tried playing a rogue, but I think I missed an area. I was doing fine, got up to level 10, went to another area and suddenly everything around me was level 20 or higher. :willy_nilly:

Haven't started playing yet... truth to be told, I haven't even installed it, but I have all the things I need, just waiting for March to have my bandwidth reset. And when I do, Sam promised to twink the holly hell out of me :p

More like play your bodyguard in the newb area, get you outfitted and show you around the major city.

We should be able to get you to level 20 in a couple of weeks. :D

:24:

it comes with time... I've been playing since classic WoW, started about a year after launch, and I played beta.

ICC10 = Icecrown Citadel 10 man difficulty
PUG = pick up group, as in random raid members, not a guild run
Saurfang = 4th boss in ICC, and he spawns blood beasts during the battle that you can't get hit by otherwise he gains power

A little clearer now? ;)

Thank you for the translation. :p

I've actually been thinking about looking for a guild, but I'm not sure I'm high enough yet.

Have a question for the hardcore WoWers -- what's the best character to have?

It really depends on the playstyle you think you might like.

Ranged Magical Damage
Mage
Warlock
Priest (shadow spec)
Druid (balance spec)
Shaman (elemental spec)

Melee DPS
Rogue
Warrior (fury or arms specs)
Paladin (ret spec)
Shaman (enhancement spec)
Druid (feral spec)

Tank
Warrior (prot spec)
Paladin (prot spec)
Druid (feral spec)

Healer
Priest (holy or discipline spec)
Paladin (holy spec)
Shaman (restoration spec)
Druid (restoration spec)

and then hunters are ranged DPS, but not magic based, and they have a pet.

So if you think you might like to stand in the back and do damage to things, and not do anything else ever, a mage, warlock, or hunter are your best bets as pure DPS classes. If you want to do ranged damage but have flexability to do something else, then you might want to look at a druid, shaman, or priest, which are hybrid DPS classes with other talent trees that you could change to if you got bored of what you were doing.

If you like to stand at the front and beat things to death, then the rogue is the pure melee DPS class. Warriors, paladins, shaman, and druids are all hybrid classes with other trees than just melee damage.

If you want to tank and keep things from killing your party members, then a warrior, paladin, or druid is what you should be looking at. Personally, I find tanking to be the most fun, but tanks are a weird sort. I like to do other things too, but I enjoy tanking the most.

Finally, if you want to keep your group alive, then one of the healing classes might be for you. Paladins and discipline priests do a lot of single target healing, druids can single target heal or group heal, and there's some micromanagement involved with the healing spells. Holy priests are excellent at group healing, but not so much at single target healing, and shaman are very good at group healing people that are close together, and can do a decent job single target healing.

Honestly though, it all comes down to personal preference. I've played a paladin for four years, and while I've played other classes as my main for periods of time, I always come back to the class, despite it's deficiencies and frustrations. I'd recommend trying out a few classes to level 20-30 or so to see what you enjoy. I've played a paladin, mage, and druid at 80, and they all play very differently, and are all enjoyable in their own ways.

I've actually been thinking about looking for a guild, but I'm not sure I'm high enough yet.

Some guilds (like mine) don't generally recruit new players under the level cap, though there are exceptions. But there are also some guilds that are leveling guilds where you can find a lot of people the same or close to your level that you can group with. I solo leveled my paladin and was only a part of two guilds for brief periods of time when I leveled her a few years ago. I enjoyed soloing, but at the same time it was frustrating because I couldn't get into groups for instances. But that's not as big of a deal anymore with the cross-realm LFG system. But if you can find a good guild to be a part of, you might meet some new people that can help you along the way. Then when you get to 80 and you discover that the guild doesn't really offer what you're looking for, you're under no obligation to stick around.

... LONG POST....

I can imagine Leah's face as she reads this... :eek:willy_nilly:

:24:

Thanks for the breakdown... I've been on for a couple of months off and on and never saw it explained that clearly. :thumbup

Leah:
DPS is Damage Per Second, basically just how hard you can hit.
Spec is short for specialization. You can decide what skills your character can learn. For instance, my hunter is very big on Beast Mastery and has barely touched Survival.

We'll play around with a few types and see what you like. :)

Thanks retro -- you were very helpful.

I think I will hook myself up with a hunter (don't grin like that Teddy :p), cause I am a little skittish when it comes to battle, and having a pet deal with most of the "close encounters" while I stay back and shoot from a safe distance is way more up my ally.

Though if we look at it from a more strategical angle, I will be teaming up with Teddy, and having a healer would be helpful.

I still like the idea of a hunter though.

Anyway, I picked up that there are different races to choose too.... someone explain those to me?

Races are largely asthetic, though they do have different abilities which could come in handy depending on your class choice. The first question though is whether you plan on playing Alliance or Horde.

I'll let Retro or somebody with more experience run that down for you.

I will say that certain races are only available if you get Burning Crusade expansion and still others with Lich King expansion.

Currently, all you have is the base game, so all of them won't be available to you.

Alliance. I'm a Dranie.

Kinda hard to be her tour guide if I'm not allowed to talk to her. :p

What he said :p

btw - what's the difference between alliance and horde?

Yeah I ask a lot of questions :p

Basically, the world is at war at the higher levels (won't affect you for quite some time).

Those are the two sides and each race is one or the other.

Figured that out now... I actually broke out the manual.... Normal server for me! No freakin' PvP, I am skittish as it is!

okay, well for a hunter, your race choices are:

Night Elf
Dwarf
Draenei (if you have the Burning Crusade expansion)

When Cataclysm comes out, Humans and Worgen (new race in Cataclysm) will also have the ability to be hunters.

The main benefits you'll see as a hunter for those races are:

Night Elf - Shadowmeld
Activate to slip into the shadows, reducing the chance for enemies to detect your presence. Lasts until cancelled or upon moving. Any threat is restored versus enemies still in combat upon cancellation of this effect.

Dwarf - Gun Specialization
Your chance to critically hit with Guns is increased by 1%.

Draenei - Heroic Presence
Increases chance to hit with all spells and attacks by 1% for you and all party members within 30 yards. (does not stack)

Other than that it's pretty much aesthetic.

OK, made it to Lvl 46 last night.

This weeks sometime I'm doing my first dungeon. Something like Zul Farrak or similiar. I've got half a dozen quests in there, so I kinda have to. NO CLUE what I'm doing. :willy_nilly:

YES, I know I should have been doing dungeons a long time ago. :(

don't feel too bad, when I leveled my first paladin I did three dungeons on my way to 60... Deadmines twice, and I was run through Scarlet Monastery :24:
