Salary cap in baseball?

Boston Red Sox owner John Henry is renewing his call for a baseball salary cap.Henry said Wednesday he thinks all owners would support an "enlightened" salary cap to improve competitive balance and that players might agree. He did not give details.
Henry's call came Wednesday at spring training after the New York Yankees signed three free agents for a total of $423.5 million during the off season. The Red Sox gave out much shorter and cheaper deals.
Exactly five years earlier, Henry called for a salary cap when the Yankees obtained Alex Rodriguez in a trade with Texas after the Red Sox failed to complete a trade for him.
At that time, he advocated a cap to deal with a team that he said has far more resources than any other team.

yes, the Red Sox do have a high number, but also we passed on a lot of free agents this year and we got rid of one disgruntled and arrogant players (Manny) but I still think that every sport (In the USA) should have a salary cap, it's absurd to think how much money these guys get.

Can you imagine what some of the true greats would be earning if playing today??

At some point the system in all sports is going to break. There is only so much revenue in tv and advertising. My guess is that unless the govt gets involved, which I would hate, that eventually we are going to see the superbowl, stanley cup playoffs, baseball playoffs, and college tournament all go to pay per view. Not sure which ones apply but they could be threatened with removal of anti trust exemptions.

wow....amazing...and did you know when Derek Sanderson got the first million dollar contract in hockey he was in debt to his drug dealer nearly $500,000?
ah good old Derek

never heard that about him.

knew he had a lot of issues.

I was a huge fan of the Bruins back in that era with Orr. Sanderson, Esposito, Bucyk, etc.

Did I ever tell ya I got Orrs autograph back in the 90'S ?

We went to an Italian resturant not far from the Arena and he was there in a corner. It took me a few beers to finally ask him for it. I hate doing that stuff but I was such a fan of his. I was with a group of about 20 on a business trip and finally got the nerve. Guy is a class act

We've had talk about it over here in football but it just wouldn't work out. Top players would just piss off to the Italian or Spanish league where they could still get silly money. Guess it could work in Baseball though, I mean, where else are they going to go and get paid as much?
