I’d choose a tech-focused career like web development or digital marketing. These fields offer fast-growing opportunities, remote work, and freelance potential. Starting with online courses, building a portfolio, and networking could open doors, allowing a fresh start with high-demand skills, even without prior experience.

I am not sure what I will going to do once I get retired from the job. I am thinking my son to do some business and I will support him. I will engage myself fully on online sites to earn some extra money.

Well, starting something fresh at 40 after being broke will not be an easy thing to do. If you have financial stability and options in hand, making a lateral shift in career is easy and we seen many doing that. Being financial broke makes the situation very tough. But then one has to have the faith that age should not restrict. You will have to see what can suit your interest and give you good financial prospect. Since it's a broke situation, one might have to compromise with the interest and passion and look for things that will get the money more.

I think 40 is still a young age to start fresh. Your body and find will be fit to start over again. If I am ever in that position, I would start learning profitable skills, blockchain development or game development for instance, than use my learned skills to become self employed.

That’s how I see it — 40 is still young to start over. By the way, how old are you?

Does a 40 year old still have the capacity to venture into those kinds of skills, even when he doesn't have prior knowledge of it at all? I'm just wondering if the learning process is as fast as a teenager or someone in his 20s

If I were 40 and starting over financially, I’d probably pick a career that balances stability, growth potential, and personal interest. I’d lean toward something like digital marketing or web development fields that allow remote work, have high demand, and can be self-taught or upskilled quickly. It offers flexibility, opportunities for freelancing, and a chance to build something sustainable from scratch.

Yes, at 40 you can still learn new skills, though progress may be slower than that of younger learners.

Yes, that is exactly my point. The process of learning something new at 40 years old is much more lower than a younger person. But hey, that is no reason not to try.

At that age, you would need a career that won't take long for you to master. And would pay you well. I would take up a career in Data Analytics if I am in that situation.
