As I was writing some long annoying paper for one of my classes today I happened to ponder something:

When it comes to posting on message boards like Otz, strong writing skills are a necessity if you want to meaningfully contribute. I've been complemented on my writing in RL, but here I think I'm the norm. In my opinion, nearly everyone here knows how to communicate well in writing, something that I see lacking all around me at work, school, and other places. I take it all for granted when I really shouldn't. Writing takes a lot of practice which public school, and even in some cases, college doesn't give you.

You have more time to think on here. As well as an edit button. Plus it's motivation. On here when you post in a thread it's very very very very likely, you're interested in the topic. Whereas real life doesn't necessarily give you that.

My writing is very bad everyone can see it .. i can too.... but forums and chats help me a lot with the language
imagine how much can help someone that already knows
If you don't work or more correct don't have work that need to write then you will not get better
and forums can give you that.

The main thing is comminication, if i can get my idea across, that is the main thing

Usually, I do try to use good writing skills on forums. However, when I feel it appropriate, I will allow myself to post using my normal vernacular.

I've got nothing in particular to support this, but I think my communication skills in writing have been at least partly bolstered by doing a lot of posting. I've been on forums since I was a young teenager, and I spent three years playing WoW which is mainly text based communication. I was already a writer before that anyway, but I think it's helped, having to constantly think about how clear I'm being.


Some people don't seem to give a shit about how they come across. Personally I find the variations in tone and mood that you convey within text fascinating.

Writing skills are valued by business leaders. Not necessary the ability to be an author but to commmunicate well using proper tense, syntax & noun-verb association. One place I worked every time a letter of some importance needed to be drafted it was brought to me to write or correct.
