This is a video of Shirley Sherrod. She got fired from her job with the Dept of Agriculture because of what she said to the NAACP. She's being accused of being racist based on the vid. Please watch it. It's about 2 1/2 minutes. Sorry for the sound, but they're all like that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7idSlkvQv0c&NR=1

Ms Sherrod is clearly being taken out of context. Listen carefully to what she says at about the 1:55 point. Her whole point of the story is that she recognized something within herself she didn't like ... and changed.

Robert Byrd was a very high ranking member of the KKK, yet libs praised him and acted as his apologists, whitewashing his past as if it were unimportant, then this lady gets thrown under the bus.

God I hate politics!

I do still believe she was being racist. I watched this vid earlier today and she still makes a statement that she didn't do everything she could for him in there (can't remember her exact wording). The fact alone that she had to point out color about it. She may have learned from this but she learned because she realized she was being racist that's really all there is to it. So whether she recognized this at all it doesn't dismiss the fact that she at one point was still being racist.

After 1:55 she continues with "it is about white and black" and "I took him to one of his own"

I can assure you that if a white person were to say that, all hell would break loose.

I've yet to understand why we have to qualify people to begin with. White farmer, black doctor. What's it matter? A farmer is a farmer, a doctor a doctor.

So the change is irrelevant to you? She still deserved to be fired?

We have all had some pretty ridiculous ideas in our past about a lot of things. Should she be criticized and fired for something that she actually overcame 24 years ago? Hell no she shouldn't. That's ridiculous. :thumbdown

I wish I could find the whole vid, because it's clearly edited before she can fully explain her point.

I missed that it was 24 years ago. :eek You'd think there would be a statute of limitations on being dumb.

Holy crap! What did I do 24 years ago that might sneak up on me??

If she could prove that she no longer thought/behaved that way then no she shouldn't. I'm wondering if something else recently happened. Like if she got into trouble for something then all of a sudden this video surfacing.

I'm drawing a blank on the name, but when the Tea Party racism crap hit the fan, I mean the airwaves, this guy dug around until he found a vid connecting NAACP & racists.

Well that makes sense to me. They were trying to say the Tea Party was racist. What better than to make them eat their own words?

I heard an interview with this woman today and she explained herself very well. During that interview they had that farmers wife on the phone, both her and the farmer thought this was being blown out of context. They were actually friends and you could tell during the conversation. The farmers wife said that this woman saved their farm and they are still thankful for what she did for them. Apparently she really went to bat to save this farm where the previous lawyers gave up. So even if she had these reservations because it was a white farmer, she did her job and saved the farm.

Do I think the White house should have demanded her resignation, no. I think they were panicking because Glen Beck was going to air his show with the tape in a few hours. But they should have stood up to Beck and Hannity and backed her. I hope that the White house comes out and apologizes to her and gives her job back.

This is the same bullshit Hannity is pulling by making something out of nothing over the New Black Panthers party on voter intimidation.

24...years ago?! I was like three months old.
I don't like the racist remarks she made, but if it was that long ago and she was telling the story to discourage racism... I kinda think that takes a bit of courage. She knew she was wrong and she was using her own imperfections to teach other people what not to do.

Maybe she got fired because politicians aren't supposed to make mistakes or have flaws.
She blew their cover.:24:

This was headline news on Foxnews and they really made this NEWS...

I agree with you that there is a lot more to this then we get to hear..

I watched the Video twice and you can tell there is a lot more that is not heard before and after the video ( edited for sensationalism ) and it can only lead to much doubt and speculation. Why would one only leave the meaty part of the racist statement in a video clip and not all of it.. Because they may not want you to hear it may not have been as bad as it really was..

Were the statements acceptable as said.. No, but taken out of context it's gas on fire..

I don't know anyone that has every said anything that could not be taken out of context if properly edited.. :thumbdown

she's kind of admitted racist behaviour there by admitting she treated the white farmer differently. I don't think anything she said was particularly racist, but admitting her prejudice affected her actions was a bad move. She should have lost her job for that alone because she's admitting discriminating against someone because of the colour of their skin.

And this points out the major flaw our "news" have today. Any reputable news agency would have vetted the story and investigated the facts before running putting it on the air. Not one freaking news agency talked to her or the farmers before running the story. Everyone was in a rush to take an edited clip and run it as fact.

It was 24 years ago. She clearly said it was the first time she had to help a white person, and that time was what made her realize her thinking was wrong so she changed it. She helped the man. The job she was fired from was one she got 5 months ago.

She should have lost her job? Really?

I'm glad to hear on the news this morning that she's been vindicated and the NAACP has apologized. I hope the Ag Dept offers her the job back so she can refuse. I'm watching O'Reilly this evening for the first time in a long time to see if he apologizes for saying she should resign.
