This seems, to me, a direct assault on our 1st amendment right to peaceably assemble. Doesn't being required to pay a fee before being allowed to assemble equate to the government licensing our right to assemble thereby nullifying the "right'? . Since their is no mandate for the govt. to staff a peaceful assembly, the statement that this will allow the government to "... ensures our ability to appropriately staff events for the safety of those participating." is a moot point, IMHO.

Interestingly, this news article is from the first of this month and I don't recall reading anything about it. I Googled the topic and aside from the Milwaukie Journal Sentinel, the first few Google pages link, for the most part, to "liberal" sites...Firedog Lake, Huffington Post, Think Progress. I found that interesting.

All question of how right this is aside, how would they even enforce this for larger groups? Some protests involve hundreds, even thousands of people. How would they keep track of who had attended and charge them accordingly?

Sounds completely unworkable to me.

Welcome to the United States of America. Land of the free..............riiiiiiiiiight.

Why aren't the "freedom and liberty" libertarian and conservative types out in force opposing this?

This is stupid. Ask permission to protest?? You've got to be smoking something that ought to be legal. I hope the Occupiers hear about this.
