I am still on XP. Maybe with Service Pack 2 Vista's no longer a dog.
A confidential source has revealed that Microsoft will deliver a Release Candidate in February, 2009 with the final SP2 binary scheduled for RTM (Release To Manufacturing) in April, 2009.

Some details on what will be on SP2 (beyond the usual bug and security fixes):

Adds Windows Search 4.0 for faster and improved relevancy in searches.
Contains the Bluetooth 2.1 Feature Pack supporting the most recent specification for Bluetooth Technology.
Ability to record data on to Blu-Ray media natively in Windows Vista.
Adds Windows Connect Now (WCN) to simplify Wi-Fi Configuration.
Enables the exFAT file system to support Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) timestamps, which allows correct file syncronization across time zones.

Lately I read somewhere people are buying used PCs for salvage copies of Windows XP.
Probably just a rumor. You can't use a Dell COA XP label for installation of Windows on anything but a Dell (and usually just within a particular product line). Likewise for HP, eMachines, etc. You can only use those product keys with the comparable set of setup disks, usually "restore" disks, so they're essentially useless unless you happen to have the same or similar model as they were originally designed with. I have yet to see an exception with this, but if someone has one, please point it out to me - I'd be curious to see if there's any OEM's who used a true OEM copy of XP.

I guess there's always old custom-built PC's. Those are a good find for XP COA's, though you can't always know the reliability of them. Many custom-PC builders would build without COA's, and would just use the same generic product key for all the computers they built. Highly illegal, but it'd be hard for MS to catch them doing this.

Windows ties itself to the computers hardware, vista to the motherboard aswell, so unless you want a slow hard drive in your pc then pointless buying old pc to get xp, just buy it oem like i have!

Though i need to buy all my OS seperatly as i build PC's

And any other hardware upgrade or re-instalation will result in window needing re-activation

Other than being a little prettier, Vista really hasn't impressed me. Hopefully the service pack will tune it up a little. The only reason I've kept it is that it's tied to the warranty.

OEM versions of Windows can be moved to another computer by simply calling up Microsoft. I've done it many times as I've changed out the motherboard and other hardware in my system. The problem with using the product keys or XP disks from a proprietary source is that they will only work on the specific models they were designed for. So a Dell Dimension restory disk will only work on Dell Dimensions, etc. And you can't take the product key and use it with a standard XP installation disk - trust me, I've tried that on multiple occassions. ;)

What kind of computer. I thought Vista was tied to my HP warranty but it turns out they couldn't give two shits. I had XP up and running about two weeks later, haven't looked back.

The worst they will do is refuse software support, but if anything hardware-wise dies, even though you reinstall XP, you should be fine.

HP doesn't cover software at all so I suppose that's why my warranty is unaffected. I've been told that Toshiba is pretty strict about Vista/Warranty. Gateway's like you said, they cover hardware, but not software if you install XP.
