This is a thread for you to post wildlife from where you live. These are a few animals I've seen and are my favorite in my area.

Stoat - Quite shy but I've seen about two or three run across the road

Kingfisher - Get them in the town park and down the river
kingfisher.jpg

Hedgehog - They hibernate in winter but are quite common at night, have to keep stopping the dog grabbing them.

Awww, lovely pics Peter. :)

Love hedgehogs, they are so damn cute. I would have a pet hedgehog if they weren't rife with fleas.

Scarlet Ibis - National Bird

The Scarlet Ibis (Eudocimus ruber) is a species of ibis that occurs in tropical South America and Trinidad and Tobago. It is the national bird of Trinidad and Tobago and is featured on the Coat of Arms along with the Cocrico (Rufous-vented Chachalaca). The largest habitat of the Scarlet Ibis is the Caroni Swamp, Central Trinidad.

At sunset, hundreds of birds fly in from neighbouring lagoons to roost for the night and the drab mangrove bushes become festooned, as if by magic, with scarlet "blooms".

Alligator- Fun to watch the tourists try to get them to come closer by sticking their hands in the water and spalshing them around.

Beautiful pic, CB.

I have seen a wildlife documentary about this, but was a long time ago. It fascinates me this kind of thing.

Are you originally from Trinidad then? :)

Whitetailed deer. They like to run into the road and fuck up cars. They are delicious when prepared correctly.

Striped skunk. They are useless and stink like Hell.

Leatherback turtle - Endangered species.

Unraveling the mysteries of the leatherback sea turtle's biology and behaviour is increasingly important because this animal, which has existed since the time of the dinosaurs, is now a critically endangered species. The leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) is so different from the six other marine turtle species that it is in a taxonomic family all of its own called Dermochelyidae. This species has remained virtually unchanged since it first began swimming in the world's oceans more than 90 million years ago.

Sea Turtle Conservation
The island of Trinidad has one of the largest nesting populations of sea turtles in the world. In 1999 Nature Seekers Inc. implemented a Leatherback Sea Turtle Tagging Project in order to identify the number of turtles nesting on the beach near Matura on the east coast of Trinidad. For tagging to be successful, this activity must be continued for a number of years.

Mathura is the site of one of the most important nesting beaches for endangered leatherback turtles, enormous reptiles that can weigh a ton and dive deeper than many whales. Each year, more than 2,000 of these giants haul themselves onto Matura Beach to lay their eggs. With leatherback populations declining more quickly than any other large animal in modern history, each turtle is precious.

Copperhead. These are mean sum bitches that would rather just bite you than try to get away.

Longnose Gar. I don't know squat about them, but they are ugly.

Thanks Freespeech. The scarlet Ibis is truly a magnificent sight and they fill the sky with a sea of red on evenings.

Yes, I am from Trinidad. Actually it's from where I am posting.

We have leatherbacks nest here. We adopted a nest as a present for my older brother's birthday.

That's cool Sneakiecat.

The leatherbacks, when they come to lay in the season, because they are so slow on land moving at sluggishly crawling pace make for easy prey so they have to be carefully guarded. It's a crime to kill any of them. It's amazing for how long they have been in existence virtually unchanged and the mere size of them.
