maybe it's not getting optimal signal. it could also be it's not getting very good internet speed so your computer is detecting that. does it say "Limited" with yellow warning symbol?

a real IT person would have said "Restart the computer"

amateurs

no, a real IT person would read carefully what the question is and answer accordingly.

she didn't claim she is having internet issue. she just wants to know why computer is saying one thing when router isn't giving any prob.
and after all, like I said router could be getting slow internet, in which case btw, rebooting computer does nothing.

You getting your panties in an uproar? :eek Give us a little more information to diagnose the issue. :)

She doesn't see a real prob happening so she probably can't give us any more info but I did ask if she sees a warning icon over the wireless icon. If she gets any message saying "Limited internet" but she still is able to browse, then it's slow internet. I have seen this before. It's not the computer. If she sees an icon saying there is NO internet but still able to browse, then it may actually be issue with computer.

I do tell people in many cases "reboot your computer" but claiming to be an IT person and yet only saying "reboot" the computer everytime someone mentions a word "problem" would be like being an indian guy working for Dell, reading a script from a computer monitor. Real IT would try to see the potential persistent prob and try to resolve it. Don't just "work around" but actually do the "fix"

It wont. Are you running xp or vista or 7?

What kind of error did you get and can you give us a screenshot? Without seeing what you saw, I would say
it could have been your internet dropped just for a brief moment, and that's probably an error you saw but it's back online so everything is working. It happens even if you have high speed internet. Especially if you have crap isp. like ATT for example.

it was a joke.

Audraa, restart your computer ;)

:D ok cool then. but man, it bothers me when I hear people asking their friends for computer advice and neither of them knows how to really troubleshoot because neither of them are IT (blind leading the blind) and prob could be minor but first thing they say is "wipe and reinstall windows"
and my mind screams NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Note to all: Even if the prob with your windows seems extreme, without first trying to diagnose and resolve the issues you should NOT just wipe and reinstall windows.

Reinstalling windows is always the LAST resort. It only should be done when you have given up.

Reason I do not recommend it is you risk losing your files, settings, programs, if you have not backed them up properly. You will spend hours just reinstalling all the apps, and reactivating, and such.

well shit! can you see it?

I can barely see it. Screenshot was too small.
but I can tell you from what I see-

You are running windows Vista (should upgrade to 7)
The wireless notification icon is actually the intel integrated wireless notification.
This obviously is a laptop but even laptops come with ethernet jack.
I know it sounds like I'm asking stupid question but I get lots of stupid answers
so just please answer this one. Do you currently have an ethernet cable hooked
up on your laptop?

AUDRAA you do not need to upgrade to Windows 7! Just go into your network connections and try resetting the connection to your router. :)
