WATERVILLE — A Winslow man faces murder charges after allegedly shooting a man to death outside a bar on The Concourse late Tuesday, according to police. The victim of a shooting is loaded into an ambulance on The Concourse in Waterville late Tuesday night. Police investigate the scene where a man was shot on The Concourse late Tuesday night in Waterville.
Matthew Partridge, 30, left the scene in a pickup truck after shooting Justin V. Smith, 26, of China, but was caught at 11:26 p.m. by a Maine state police trooper on Route 8 in Smithfield, state police Lt. Chris Coleman said Wednesday morning at a press conference in City Hall. The men apparently had been inside the You Know Whose Pub on The Concourse before the shooting and it is not clear whether they knew each other. “At this point, we don’t believe they did,” Coleman said at the 8:30 a.m. press conference. At the conference, police Chief Joseph Massey said the communications center started receiving 911 calls a little after 11 p.m. Tuesday about the shooting. Officers who responded found Smith lying on the ground. He was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center’s Thayer Campus and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter, Massey said. Coleman said Smith’s body was on its way to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta and an autopsy probably would be performed this afternoon. Coleman said the state trooper stopped the pickup truck in Smithfield after the shooting for two reasons: It matched the description given to police at the scene and one of its headlights was out.
Partridge was apprehended without incident, he said. He said he would not release information about the type of weapon used to shoot Smith, as the case is under investigation. “At this point, the investigation is very active and open, so we have to be careful about what we say,” he said. Just before 9 a.m. Wednesday, Partridge was being processed at the police department where he was expected to be charged with murder, and then he would be taken to Kennebec County Jail in Augusta, according to Coleman. The state Attorney General’s Office is working on the case. Partridge will make his first court appearance at 1 p.m. today in Waterville District Court, according to state police spokesman Steve McCausland.
