Security must be provided by police for everyone, regardless of status.
Fire protection & rescue must be provided by the fire department for everyone, regardless of status.
Education must be provided to all children, regardless of status.
Healthcare must be provided to everyone, regardless of status.

Why isn't food provided by some governmental agency to everyone, regardless of status?

I wonder the same thing, I mean there are free food banks and stuff, but it's not enough to feed everyone, it's not like you're giving out money to people, it's FOOD, everyone is entitled to food.

Why don't we have a basic right to food.....?

Because, we have to pay for it. To cover the costs of making, producing this food, from wherever the starting point is to wherever it's sold/distributed. In short, that's why. Some people go hungry yes, but economically it's unfeasible for food to be free to people, and you couldn't just have it free for some people because there would be a heck of a stink caused. Everyone would have the same right in this case, so financially it's not possible for everyone to have a basic right to food, if you want food, pay for it.

We do have a basic right to food. You are confusing right to food and right to be free from hunger.

The right to food, like all human rights, isn’t just about protecting peoples’ lives, it’s about protecting people’s health and dignity. The right to food means that every person must have physical and economic access at all times to food that is adequate in quantity and quality to allow for a healthy and active life.

I agree with you and I suspect Acc was hoping somebody would say this.

Now the next question is why is food not a basic right but health care is considered by many to be.

Kind of hard to live if you do not have food so logically it would seem if there was any fundamental right then it would be to be provided with food and housing along with health care. No point in having health care if you have no food and no place to live.

Contrary to popular belief food isn't only found on supermarket shelves although you need to know how to forage correctly.

what about the homeless who can't get jobs genius? i'm not making excuses for everyone but I know when I used to go job hunting i rarely ever got return calls after an interview. Workplaces are fucking anal. my mom just applied for a managerial position and got turned down because she didnt have enough experience" but has 20 years of managerial experience in the retail & automotive parts feild in which she works

The safety nets put in place are necessary in a civilized society. You don't scrap the system because a few choose to abuse it. You correct it to minimize the amount of people that can abuse it leaving the resources that truly need the help.
You live in a civilized society and the money you make isn't even close to enough to sustain yourself completely. You like everyone else in your community benefits from common goods and services. You don't pay the electric company enough money to justify running lines to your house from the power plant. You don't pay enough in road taxes to build all the roads needed for your travels. You don't pay enough to get most of the basic necessities you use everyday. It was through the government and local people that you are able to live the civilized lie you live.
You don't make enough to deserve what you receive from society, you like everyone else in your community reap the benefits from living in a community. So until you live on some deserted island supplying every one of your own needs, it's pretty disingenuous to bitch about others.

Tell me where I'm wrong.

We all benefit from being in a civilized country. You could not do it all on your own, unless you lived out in the middle of the woods off the grid... even then, you would require items produced by others...

You can get it. They'll put you on payment plans, or you'll have to take out a loan with your bank. Or you can go to a free clinic, or a sliding scale one.

I don't recall ever reading your opinion about NHS. Is it the same as this?

We just passed the law, but my question was global. How about your country? Free food for all?

We do have a basic right to food. If you're not working you recieve benifits which are to pay for your basic needs, including food. If you choose to pay for something else with them, that's your choise. I think in the USA, you even get food stamps if you're on benifits, right?

Yes, we have food stamps, WIC, free school lunch programs and various other programs. You might go hungry here in the US, but you won't starve to death.
