I have a few customers. I am in the construction business. At any given moment I may have over a dozen active jobs and that many or more winding down. Why call and ask me a question as follows..."What is the status of the (insert whatever) on my job number 1035?" These are customers I have had for 20 years or more. They know I do not use their job numbers. I go by the name of the job.
We end up doing the same dance every time. "Mind telling me what job we are talking about?"

I used to be part owner of a plumbing company we had sometime 15 houses on the go all at once. I feel your pain. I used to just go by street name. Not job number.

Comedy of errors. They have asked me to check another guy's drawings. They sent me a set of his drawings to check but no contract drawings. I call Friday and request contract drawings. Monday I get contract drawings and realize I do not have all of the other guys drawings to check. I call and request them. I got the latest drawings to check today only to realize I do not have the latest contract drawings. geez.

If my customers use a PO, I go by the PO. If my customers use a job name, I go by the job name. If my customers use a street address, I go by a street address. I've found that it increases the odds of doing more business with people if you work within THIER system, particularly if they're the ones writing my paycheck.

:homo:

Is it really that hard to give good customer service?

I can see how that would go over with my customers... "Don't give me the po number that I assigned to the job, give me the job name! I can't be bothered to look it up" :24:

I take a lot of orders by telephone and am the only person looking after three quarters of the system so I have my own way of looking up old jobs. The problem is, our order forms are also full of junk that isn't much use to me.

So people will quote an 'account name' which is unfortunately absolute bollocks if they want me to find them their last order. But they think they're being helpful. Or they'll give me their last invoice number when I really need the postcode for what they want, etc etc.

Of course, all this hones my speed at being the person who leads the conversation.

I have 2 builders that use the customers last name. One builder goes by street address and another uses a job number.
Plus various retail jobs that are referenced either by PO number or customer name.:willy_nilly:

I dont get much lot/block references since we dont have any production builders. That was easy.

Just shoot me.

I have to know so much about a job and know which drawings to pull out it is just easier for me to have a job name as a reference. I use their job numbers on everything we draw but trust me when I say it is hard to keep up with all the names, locations and job numbers.
