Why do sugary drinks still exist?

Sugar is only a means to an end. It tastes good, but that's it - at the end of the day it is nothing but empty useless calories. Which means that once something comes along that tastes as good without the calories, it would surely become obsolete. Useless.

Aspartamine (the first artifical sweetener that was actually pretty good) should've dealt a heavy blow to old-fashioned sugary drinks. Yeah, there were some mutterings about potential health risks, but I don't remember anything coming from them, and in any case, the health risks from lots of empty calories trumps anything aspartamine supposedly put you at risk of. Now we have sugar substitutes that make aspartamine taste like ... well, like artificial sweetener. Coke Zero? Which really has the Classic Coke taste to a tee with zero calories? Been around for months now.

Obviously someone's still buying these hopelessly outdated, unhealthy versions, but who? And why???

Sugar isn't bad for you... refined sugar is bad for you... get it right. Aspartame is supposably worse for you than sugar. Do you actually know what you're talking about?

I am of course referring to refined sugar. They don't make unhealthy drinks with the other kind, do they??

Anything in excess can be bad for you.

We live in a free society, and as such, people are free to enjoy sugar if they so wish.

This is not about living in a free society :confused

.... I am simply wondering why people would choose an unhealthy drink when something which tastes identical but is healthier is freely available.

Because they are free to do so.

And if you ask me, Coke Zero tastes crap compared to proper coke.

There is a taste difference as well as a texture difference, even with sweeteners like splenda. I tend to sweeten my teas and coffee's with Honey and the standard granulated sugar (and the sugar in the raw stuff). I tried the sweeteners and they all altered the flavor and the texture in a poor way.

In soft drinks, even with "alternative sweeteners" the drink is fairly unhealthy to begin with. Cola with or without the sweeteners still contain the power to rot teeth and such. Coke Zero to me, tastes flat as hell with a texture on the aftertaste that has me wanting for a glass of water.

Coke tastes like shit period. ;)
The only reason Coke exists in my opinion is Rum.

Diet Coke tastes flat so I wouldn't doubt Coke Zero would either...

AMEN!!!!

And WHY oh WHY aren't more people caring about their weight/health and drinking water?!?!?! Unless I am drinking alcohol, I am drinking water and water only. People don't realise, I think, how many useless calories they consume in beverages. It's shocking really.

Because they don't want to eat like a PoW?

Don't blame them.

Hey, people still like to eat the crap in McDonalds even though its bad for them, same goes with these drinks though I agree with Zorak, Coke Zero tastes crap. Free choice though so up to them though I'm suprised the big brother government we've got now hasn't tried to ban these too.

People drink it because they like it. Why else are places like TacoBell, McDonalds, Wendy's still open serving fatty food? Because people like it.

I don't eat at those places often, or drink soda often... but now and then I give in and partake. I like the taste.

Somethings are just pointless to debate.

Edit: Pepsi is better.
