Why couldn't it just be a cold?

So I went to the doctor today to see why this cold/sinus infection was lingering so long and to see if there was anything wrong with my ears before I fly out to California Friday. They go through the normal stuff of checking my temperature and blood pressure and all. The nurse said that my blood pressure and pluse rate were high so she tried the other arm. It was still high but was a little lower than before. She made a note and sent the doctor in. The doctor confirmed that I had a sinus infection and fluid built up in my ears (which is why I've been having a hard time hearing my students). He said that while he should prescribe me a couple of different things, he was worried about my blood pressure (some of the medicines can raise it). He asked me when the last time I had my TSH levels check.

A little bit of background-
When I was 19, my doctor discovered I had some issues with my thyroid gland (a multinodular goiter to be exact). They did a biopsy (which came back indeterminable) and decided to check it with ultrasounds and blood test every six month. Fastforward to this past summer, to what should have been my last of the six month checkups (I'd move to yearly) if the goiter hadn't grown. Well, it did and I had the whole gland removed in September and I'm now on thyroid hormone replacement for the rest of my life. TSH is one of the hormones they test for.

My doctor knew I had had the surgery and was concerned that my thyroid levels aren't right, which would cause the high blood pressure. So, I went in for a sinus problem and ended up having to have my blood drawn to see if there's a problem. I won't know anything until Wednesday. I have an appointment with my endocrinologist in a couple of weeks that we made a few months ago to check the same thing they're checking now. I know it's good if there's a problem and we find it now but I really wasn't prepared to deal with all this now.

:( I wish you the best of luck. Dealing with long term problems like that is such a pita. Of course I wouldn't know because I rarely ever seem to get sick or have problems like that , so I can't sympathize with you to the fullest extent.

Girl.....I feel ya! I go back to my endocrinologist Wed (valentines day). I am soooo sick of having my blood taken every 2 wks. It gets real old! I am just ready to get my taken care of and under control (which once it is, I was told that I will be on thyroid hormones too for the rest of my life)
I hope everything is okay for you. Sucks going to the dr for something simple and leave with a totally way off base problem than what you went in for. :(

I can't go to the dr b/c of no insurance but if i can find out what meds will help this i can call a DR friend of my dad's and he can call it in for me.

Well, I'm waiting for the doctor to call me back with the results. Apparently, only one lady can tell me and she's currently busy.

He put me on Zyrtec, Nasonex, and Factive, which is a new, very expensive antibiotic (it would have cost about $120 with insurence).

Got a call back and while my TSH levels are a little high, I have no other symptoms of hyporthyroidism. So, it's just something I need to be aware of.
