So I went to the doctor today to see why this cold/sinus infection was lingering so long and to see if there was anything wrong with my ears before I fly out to California Friday. They go through the normal stuff of checking my temperature and blood pressure and all. The nurse said that my blood pressure and pluse rate were high so she tried the other arm. It was still high but was a little lower than before. She made a note and sent the doctor in. The doctor confirmed that I had a sinus infection and fluid built up in my ears (which is why I've been having a hard time hearing my students). He said that while he should prescribe me a couple of different things, he was worried about my blood pressure (some of the medicines can raise it). He asked me when the last time I had my TSH levels check.
A little bit of background-
When I was 19, my doctor discovered I had some issues with my thyroid gland (a multinodular goiter to be exact). They did a biopsy (which came back indeterminable) and decided to check it with ultrasounds and blood test every six month. Fastforward to this past summer, to what should have been my last of the six month checkups (I'd move to yearly) if the goiter hadn't grown. Well, it did and I had the whole gland removed in September and I'm now on thyroid hormone replacement for the rest of my life. TSH is one of the hormones they test for.
My doctor knew I had had the surgery and was concerned that my thyroid levels aren't right, which would cause the high blood pressure. So, I went in for a sinus problem and ended up having to have my blood drawn to see if there's a problem. I won't know anything until Wednesday. I have an appointment with my endocrinologist in a couple of weeks that we made a few months ago to check the same thing they're checking now. I know it's good if there's a problem and we find it now but I really wasn't prepared to deal with all this now.
