By chance is she going to IUP?

You'll most likely be coming up 81 from Tenn through Virginia, then take 77 north to Beckly WV, then 19 to 79 North to Morgantown (I just drove it the other week LOL).

The worst speed trap from Tenn to Pa will between Fayetteville and Summersville WV on 19 (DO NOT go 1MPH over the speed limit with out of state plates).

Some of the best whitewater rafting on the east coast is on 19 in W.V (you'll get a kick going over the 800' high new river bridge) and your daughter won't be that far away from (north of) Ohiopyle state park with a decent little whitewater river along with Frank Loyd Wrights "Falling water" house. Seven Springs is a nice little ski resort that will be south (north of Ohiopyle) of your daughter as well. You'll also have Wisp over at Deep Creek in Maryland (which is closer than you would think)

Indian is kind of out in "no mans land" just a ways east of Pittsburgh, but south of I-80 (runs the entire State from East to West).

Pa is kind of funny in that most of the people on the east side don't know much other than Pittsburgh on the West side, and most on the West side don't know much other than Philly or Harrisburg on the East side (people don't seem to cross from one end to the other like you find in other states, but it is a LONG drive). When I lived north of Pittsburgh, it was a longer drive to my parents house IN Pennsylvania than when I lived in NY OR West Virginia.

I've lived on both sides of the state, and for what it's worth, I always liked the west side better. Not as many people, not as crowded, and although Pittsburgh can be rough in some areas, nothing like Philly.

If you're from rural Alabama, you should find Indiana a nice little town "kind of out there".

People in North East PA love their coal. There's a fun coal mine in Scranton. Just don't go to Wilkes-Barre.

The only big difference I saw between Wilkes Barre and Scranton is that Scranton has an airport.

Harrisburg, Philly, Scranton, Reading, Allentown (and surround areas) and then the south east 83 corridor to Baltimore is the reason why I liked the western part of the state better. Then again, I was an avid outdoors kind of guy and the Western part of the state offered more things IMO (for water activities, you had lake Erie and some other large bodies of water). That said, the eastern coal region part of the state has some remarkable dirt bike / mountain bike trails. Pittsburgh offered just enough if you like the "city" experience, but I was more impressed with Birmingham (perhaps because I didn't spend a lot of time there and see the "bad" spots")

One thing to be careful of Fred is the reciprocality of the other carry states in relation to Alabama. I was surprised that it looks like that Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and Pa does NOT recognize Alabama carry permits. From North Carolina I can drive up to lake Erie with a sidearm with no problem as all those states recognize a North Carolina permit (and North Carolina recognizes Alabama) but it looks like your hosed from Alabama. Whatever you do, NEVER get caught with a loaded weapon in the car if by chance you're passing through Maryland or New York (NY is out of the way, but not that too far north of where your daughter will be at).
