Where, oh where have all the socks gone?

Do washing machines have transporter capabilities? Every wash day into my washing machine I place matched pairs of socks, and at the end of every wash day I am left with a plethora of partnerless socks. What other explanation can there be other than the humble innocuous looking washing machine is a portal for the integalactic travel of socks, giving socks of all colours, sizes and purposes readily available mass transporter access.

What is your theory?

Its the damn socks! They are smart. Dont underestimate them. I have attack socks that make sure people clear their laundry out of the dryer so I can do MY clothes. They are vicious and have rather painfull static shock.

See, it's my dryer that eat's them, not the washing machine. They tend to make it out of the washer and in to the dryer, and then are never seen or heard from again.
