Kayak searches all of the websites... so it'd doubtful you'll find cheaper. I used Bing for my last trip, to search different sites and airlines.

I get my best deals directly from the airlines. I fly AirTran, a lot but I've seen some good deals with both Southwest and American Airlines, recently. The best deals are for flights on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. I search via hotwire frequently.

I would always check the airline's site directly - the fares that kayak returns are not always the best.

Also, monitor the airlines for deals. JetBlue posts some really fantastic specials sometimes.

there's got to be cheaper tickets than kayak, anyone know of anyplace??

Are you flexible on dates and times ?

I always found Expedia.com to be the best at finding Mix and Match of airlines..

But if you are looking at one airline and trying to fly direct best to go to each one individually and look as CityGirl already said..

do the airlines still do standby? how much is the price reduced?

Yes, but it's not recommended as Airlines fly at minimum 95% capacity between major cities.. That leaves very little room for error as there are always last minute buyers.

Again it depends on where you are going and what time of year..

You could always book a flight that is a popular business flight and bound to get overbooked, and take the $400 travel credits they always offer to people willing to change :p

I live in OKC and flights out of OKC tend to be very costly. I can drive a little over 2 hours to Wichita and take a nonstop flight and save more than 1/2 the cost of flying from OKC even when I factor in the cost of gas and the parking fee. The savings is worth the drive time. EX. Airtran from Wichita to Atlanta when I booked tickets was $157 each way (though I've gotten the same flight as low as $69...I think those days are over!) At the time I booked, the cheapest one way fare out of OKC was $350. Now, if I'd waited and booked today, I could get Southwest OKC-ATL for $199 one way with layover and I'd have bought that! Delta is $507.90, American Airlines $295 going $315 returning. All that to say if you have access to another airport within reasonable driving distance, sometimes you can save a lot by being willing to drive a little.

I used Kayak for my last flight but also checked all the individual sites as well (yes, I'm skeptical). The prices were the same and I booked a roundtrip to Boston from Atlanta for less than $200. I learned that it's a shit ton cheaper to fly on a Tuesday. Literally, like $100 cheaper round trip b/c I flew out on Tuesday and back in on Tuesday.
