When did they start naming winter storms?

I could understnad it if we had a major storm..say a one in one hundred years on the grand schema.

lol same here...didn't really notice it before but then again, didn't have as many. In some states seems to be a weekly deal now.

The flood of 93...is a good name for the flood of 93
The great snow of "insert your year here" should suffice.
You know its snow and when it happened. ...much more informative and collective for the brain.

Who would want to associate a culture of names with something bad that happened due to mother nature?

We haven't had any of that here. Just naming cyclones. If anything they would have 'Heat Wave Martha' or 'Flood Fred' for Australia :p

They have been fairly strong storms.
