What's the difference between a show like Lost and V? Subject matter, story, story execution, actors? Lost, Rome, Deadwood, Dexter, Sopranos had atmospheres you rarely see in a show. V seems to have the same elements as far as a thriller as Lost does, but the difference between them is night and day. But V is poorly executed. I argue that cable based show like Rome have an inherent advantage of being much grittier, more graphic violence, sex, etc, but that alone does not carry a story. It has to be a great story with originality and all the elements must be spun together to make a great cake otherwise is just doesn't rise.

Heroes all most had all the right elements but got bogged down. Here is another show. I'm trying to get into The Event on NBC. It's got potential, but I'm not hooked. In comparison, I watched just one episode of Lost and was sucked right in. Of course you know I'm a hopeless Lost fan boy. It reached mythic proportions in my mind. :D

Honestly, I give a show two episodes to hook me. If they manage to do so successfully then they have my attention and therefore my viewing. Psych did it, Law and Order did it, 24 did it, Criminal Minds did it, The Mentalist did it, House did it, The Event did it. There are of course others that haven't, V didn't, Nikita didn't, Dark Blue didn't, Pawn Stars didn't. It's really a case of what draws you in. For me it's the noticeability of a certain actor or the thought after watching a trailer for a certain show of basically "Wow, gotta see this".

On V, for me it was pretty shit, the acting was wooden and the story was just not grabbing my attention.

I thought V was awful

I like Dark Blue

Has a certain grittyness to it

One problem I have is when a new show has a ton of characters and half of em seem to look a lot alike. Drives me crazy trying to follow the plot at times cause I am not sure which character it is. Boardwalk Jungle is like that for me.

The problem with Lost was that if you missed a week you would be lost.. IMO

I watched the first 4 weeks give or take and then lost interest

My wife made it through Season 3 before she threw in the towel. She wanted it to move faster. I was so enamored I was happy with the pace although I did get a little irritated when they got off the island then decided to come back. Then there was the alternate reality. :)

Even though there is an active "Walking Dead" thread, it is a great example of a show that has it, "it" being the components of a story that keep me interested. First and foremost I like the characters, secondly I like the apocalyptic story and its pacing. I like the human and group interactions some based on sexual and racial prejudices and the atmosphere. Considering it is a zombie story, it has set a high bar for story telling, maybe just because all of the elements click for me. Not to suggest that everyone will like this show. I mean it is a gruesome at times, zombie story. :)

Yeah I gave up at the end of Season 3. I'm not a big fan of shows that go on for a long time becuase I just get so bored. I might one day watch the rest of the seasons though.

I watched ALL the seasons of Lost cuz I was a fanatic for that show! I couldnt wait to watch it every week. I even DVR'd it and watched it twice just to make sure I got the full meaning of everything cuz it was so intense. Hated the ending though! I have ALL but the last season on Blueray. :D

V I got into 3 episodes and dropped it off my list.:thumbdown It just sucked! I was liking ABC's Flash Forward but I moved and lost track of it cuz of the time difference change screwed me up. :willy_nilly:
