I was looking at this timeline on the Middle East [LINK], thinking that I could find a firm root to start from to base an opinion. What I found was that the region has never been really stable. Everybody, including Europe, has fucked the whole area and people over time and again. If I were King of America here's what I would do, and urge all other foreign sovereigns to do as well:

Leave.

Pack up all military, embassies, dignitaries, whatever, and go. Maybe offer sanctuary to anyone willing to leave to escape the inevitable carnage to follow. Then let the people hash out their own issues and boundaries.

I would offer no military assistance to anyone whatsoever. I would gladly maintain contact through their ambassadors in America, but wouldn't hint of setting up a US embassy until peace reigned and stability returned.

The area has been in trouble from day one really. I'm with you on this one, leaving is really the best solution for all. And to me, that includes ALL US and UK support from Israel. The Jews are causing more trouble in the Middle East than all of the Muslims combined, and if they're going to do that, we should leave them to it so they can suffer their own consequences.

You'd have thought such a persecuted race would be a little nicer.

Anyway, yup, withdraw. It's the only solution.

All sounds fine except for the oil

We would need 20 years of ramping up our own oil production along with trying to go to solar, wind, nuclear, etc

Even then there would be other countries that would be effected by the loss of the oil supply I would think to a large degree.

If we planned ahead then I agree. Get the hell out and let the region nuke itself. When the oil starts to run out me thinks it will get pretty ugly.

Then we can move on to water being the most treasured resource

It will get pretty ugly?? It's ugly now! If we planned ahead it would never happen. You know that. Strategic withdrawal, and loosening exploration restrictions, would kick the oil industry into high gear. It might be painful for awhile ... think of it as ripping the bandaid off. :D

Who's idea was it to put Israel in the middle of all these Arabs anyway??? "I have an idea, let's put the Jewish state over with the Arabs. Those guys are understanding, I don't think they'll mind."

I think it was Britain and the U.N. with encouragement from the U.S.?

History of Israel.

If we can get by with an unstable oil supply, the sooner we leave, the better. I guess is can be argued how stable is it really?
