Japan is set to reinforce territorial claims over Korea's easternmost islets of Dokdo in its textbooks for elementary schools starting next year.
According to Seoul's Foreign Ministry, Tokyo is slated to push for a proposal to precisely indicate Dokdo as its own territory on the map in order to educate young students that the islets belong to Japan.
If Tokyo is to go ahead with the proposed plan it would be the first time for Japanese elementary school textbooks to mark the islets on a map as currently they only claimed South Korea's unlawful occupation of the group of small islets.
Last year, in its newly-revised educational guidebook for high school teachers instead of directly labeling the rocks as Japanese the handbook stated that there is a need for deeper understanding on territorial issues.
