This was written by a friend of mine the other day and I thought I'd share it with all of you:

===

This morning I work up to a stark reminder of what really matters. I did the usual bit, changed my little girl, got her breakfast and a drink, put a movie in for her then stepped onto the porch to have a smoke while she watched TV.

The sight outside was like something out of a movie

3 fire trucks, and police blocking the street end from end, you can’t get off the street even if you need to right now.

Three houses up the street, the house where my son’s little friends live is on fire. Thankfully all the kids had gone off to school early this morning, them and my little boy walk together each day. But I sit here and think, it’s almost Christmas, what kind of Christmas will those kids have?

What kind of Christmas will anyone have homeless and out their on the streets….or for that matter, so far from home and their loved ones that a real Christmas is something they can only have in their memories and minds

I sit here and wonder, what’s happened to us all….as a people and as a society…with our RUSH RUSH ME FIRST, GIMMIE SIMMIE MINE attitudes, our commercialism and beliefs that things like Christmas are best celebrated by how much money we can spend lavishing little trinkets on others we sometimes ignore most of the year.

We have become a society that as a whole, gives of cash before they give of time. A society that says to stop for someone is to lose in some way, be it time, money, the thing we were running to go get that may not be there when we get there.

We compete in everything and have fun with nothing because its not about spending time with friends or time doing something you enjoy as a way to relax, but about winning.

Everything in life has become about winning, and thus everyone is looking for the next angle, scam, shortcut to get a head.

I’ve already watched one person yell at a cop because they couldn’t get out the drive with the vehicles in the way. And I wonder how many people out there are like that, and I think to myself…prolly a whole hell of a lot. Gone are the days when everyone would have come outside and gathered around that neighbor, stood with them and watched and offered support, offered a place to stay, a warm drink, brought a blanket out to wrap over her shoulders….now we leave such little things to the people who in our minds “get paid to do it” and we go on our merry thinking there but for the grace of god goes I.

Well I have to believe that grace runs out on everyone at some point in time. Where will it be when it runs out on you….a highway alone trying to flag someone down because your tire is blown, wondering why no one stops when you were the driver that just blew past everyone weaving in and out and flipping them the bird just to get up the street three minutes faster.

Maybe its time to think of such things a little more. To think of others besides ourselves, and to ask ourselves…what really matters

Money and getting ahead

Or the time we have to live….and actually ENJOYING it…and better still….helping others enjoy it to.

I’m sure almost everyone here knows someone whose holiday season would be profoundly improved just by taking time to spend with them, or if you can’t get there, picking up the phone and letting them know they are not alone. I’m sure that would be a far greater gift, then a card and little trinket they can hold in their hands while sitting alone.
