After a conversation this evening with my cousin, something came up to which she had no response for, retaliating only with "You aren't normal". On the way home i was thinking hey what is normal anyway?
I'm sure most of us have asked ourselves the same question and i know that each person has a different view on it.
Is normal something that society considers right? And why does the definition of normal differ from person to person if society is in fact what we are supposed to follow?

Not sure if I am making much sense but would really like to know what you all think.

Well, "normal" is usually something that is common or happens relatively often. Things that are "not normal" are observed or happen less frequently.

Well normal is, in a way, synonomous with common. Its common to see people eating sandwiches, and not bricks, therefore eating sandwiches is normal. Conversely, people eating bricks is uncommon, therefore abnormal.

Being unique is the opposite of being normal, so a moderation of being unique and normal is always nice. You can't eat bricks, but you should stick out from the crowd a bit.

I agree with the above opinions here, Normal is the common, Its being and doing what those around you are comfortable with and expect.

What is considered normal, has two levels I think, there is normal that all of society agrees on, and then normal that is based on where you are and how you grow up.

I think often times people lean towards seeing someone or something as Not normal, if it differs from their perception of how things should be, And its much easier to Jump up and say the problem is with you rather then expand their mind and see things diffrently.

Just because things are diffrent does not make them not normal.

"Society highly values its normal man. It educates children to lose themselves and to become absurd, and thus to be normal. Normal men have killed perhaps 100,000,000 of their fellow normal men in the last 50 years."

R.D. Laing, The Politics of Experience, 1967

Human societies are all about norms, correct ways to behave, standard ways to look, socially acceptable attitudes to all things. To be judged abnormal is to be rejected, to be regarded as faulty, in need of repair.

But it's all a myth ! There is not, nor ever was, such a thing as 'normality'. This invented idea is all about conformity, about averages, about absolute measures of reality - a concept that seen from the viewpoint of complexity thought is nonsensical.

Many of our social norms are unspoken, we grow up without ever being taught what they are - let alone what they are based on (difficult...). These areas often include Law and Sex (strangely we are taught all we wish to know about violence - but never about love). We find out that we have broken a 'norm' only when censored by others, a situation not conducive to either socially acceptable behaviour nor to our self-esteem and openness!

The Abnormal Normals

Misconceptions about what is "normal"....

Most folks view the world through egocentric eyes; they act as if their own personal experience is representative of the entire planet's experience for all time. For many, if they personally have not experienced something before, it must be an unusual and abnormal experience.

Average vs. normal

1. An idealistic state of being that remains as such. Because the idea of such a state varies from being to being and any set standard is nonetheless someone elses idea of what it is this condition warrants satisfactory confirmation of being amongst the confirmed members of such class, by the individuals code.

2. Normal is about as concrete as the idea of "love". The meaning is constantly evolved to suit the momentary desires and/or needs of a single person, or group of people.

3. A tool of conformity.
Normal people never think for themselves, they play follow the leader their entire lives and freak out when confronted with any situation they were not trained to deal with.

4. There is no such thing as normal so there really cant be a definition...... no one or no thing is Normal....normal doesnt exist.

5. A word made up by this corrupt society so they could single out and attack those who are different.

'Normal is nothing but a word made up by society'.

Urban Dictionary: normal

It has been my experience too that what a person feels
personally is projected as normal.

Normalcy is determined by what is socially acceptable. anything that isn't acceptable in our society is deemed "not-normal"

i agree peter, normal is boring. i think everybody is "not normal" in there own way. if it werent for these differences we would all be boring as hell. i get that all the time. people saying "your wierd" and i know its not a bad thing. i have a strange and unique sense of humor, and im always doing impressions. somtimes i can get a small group of people roaring with laughter and other times i look dumb. so i am wierd and glad to be
