I use winamp or wmp and downloaded the k-lite codec pack and have yet to find something that won't play.

I've always had good luck with VLC. It can be kinda funky sometimes but for the most part I haven't had any problems that would make me look for something else.

I find that VLC sometimes has problems with subtitled movies/videos, so I mainly use WMP with the k-lite codec pack since I like to watch anime
