Hmm.... Letting a 4th-Grader (10 years old?) taking the subway by himself is going a tad bit far here in my oponion. I don't think that the parent is irresponsible or anything, I just don't think a child that young should be able to ride the Subway alone.

when I was a kid I couldn't ride my bike to school till I was about 12
My mother or father took me in car until then...
Wouldn't this really depend on the type of place you live though? Like not every city in the world is as evil as some.
I wouldn't do it in a place like NY but I would in my city in Australia, I wouldn't do it in Sydney Australia... Etc
I think it really matters on the city, In her case I would not be doing it....

:homo: Depends a lot where you live. I've got a friend who lives in rural Wales where people still dont lock their doors when they go out. I think things have got worse where kids need to be supervised more though. When I was 10 I used to get the bus to the town, 5 miles away all the time.

I was taking public transportation all the way across town when I was 11 in order to go to a 'top' school.

i used to ride my bike all over creation by the time i was 8 or 9. Then again we lived in probably one of the safest cities in the state. I would leave the house at like 10 am and not come back until dark and my parents had no problem with that. This was during the summer. I'd usually check in with them once or twice a day, mostly to ask them for money or something so i could go see a movie or go get a hot dog with a friend or someting. Sometimes I'd ride too far away and get tired and make them come get me lol.

I completely disapprove of this idea. Times vary. At her time, it was safe and people knew one another. Now, we don't even know who our neighbor of 3 blocks away is and crime rates such a kidnapping are really high. She needs to stop being such a lazy bitch and drive her son instead of having him take public transportation.

My parents were the same way. Guess they figured fat kids are harder to kidnap :dunno

But did you read the whole article??? Crime rates are lower in her city than they have been in years...and today we also have GPS tracking devices that we can give kids..

She's promoting the idea that modern children need some of the same independence that her generation had. Her city might be safe, but what about other cities? The GPS devices only track where the child is, by the time you get to where the child was kidnapped it might be too late.

I don't really have a problem with what she did, if she felt her id was responsible enough to let him, then so be it.
Sometimes, parents put their role as protector too far ahead of their other role, which is to prepare the children for life on their own.
