Autism Has My Child Has Just Posted the Following:

Yesterday, I took Austin to Wal-Mart to buy the IPOD he didn’t receive on Christmas.* He saved his Christmas money for it so I told him we would go and see if Wal-Mart had it.* We found the IPOD display and realized that IPOD’s are expensive.* I figured he could get the cheapest one for [...]

Is there any way you can shop with just the two of you? It might make it easier to deal with him if you can try to do that as much as possible.

Does he respond well to things in writing? I may have asked this before. If he does then maybe try writing down what is expected.

Another thing is that any kid is going to be upset when they have their heart set on getting something. Your son even more so it appears. So try to plan in advance for things that are so special. One example would be to order online for an instore pick up. Then you will know if they have it in stock.

I realize you probably know way more than I do about how to deal with this stuff. Just trying to throw out some ideas

He sounds a lot like my sister. My sister had seizures when she was a baby. The doctors prescribed barbituates to control the seizures. She stayed in a stupor due to the drugs for the next 40+ years. She absolutely believed the world revolved around her. Several years ago the doctors were able to remove a section of her brain which was believed to be the cause of her seizures and weened her off all medication. She still believes the world revolves around her but she is not as prone to physical outbursts as she was before. Although she is better she will always be emotionally retarded. You can tell when she is unhappy and she is rarely happy. Her behavior affects everyone around her. It is like being around a woman suffering from PMS for 48 years. By the way I have several scars and broke off pencil leads from her attacking me when we were younger. I feel for you with what you are dealing with and just offer this so you know you are not alone.

Thanks. Its a hard road. I should have you talk to jacob aufred! LOL

Alien allen, I have tried to take him one on one and it doesnt work. We do write things down. His behavior chart is written down, and he follows it. May be a good idea about ordering it and having it shipped to the store. I just like him being able to pick out his stuff.
