(nVIDIA 7800 GS)
Drivers: 185.85 (latest)

Every now and then my system will not boot to its resolution setting of 1280 x 1024, but to 800 x 600 instead. Rebooting does not solve the problem. Only shutting the thing down and restarting it solves the problem.

Today, even shutting it down didn't fix it.

Device manager shows the display adapter status as 'Device cannot start (code 10)'

Services shows the NVIDIA Display Driver Service (nvsvc32.exe) 'stopped'. Starting the service shows a messages that the service started, but then stopped.

Uninstalled/reinstalled video drivers - did not fix (used Driver Cleaner Pro for complete uninstall)

Installed latest video drivers - did not fix.

The kicker - Shut the system down, and turned off the power strip supplying power to it and the video card, then turned it back on and restarted. Problem solved, system boots to 1280 x 1024.

Any idea on WTF is going on here?

Stupid question, but have you ...reseated the card and/or cleaned the connections on the card?

Also any potential power shorts or issues on the board or with the Power Supply itself?

Yeah, it's not working right.

You don't like me, do you :p

We may have a winner here. It's been awhile since I cleaned out the inside as well. So I'll do that and pull the card.

Don't think there's any issues with the board or PSU, but again, as dusty as it is in there - could be.

Thanks Bryan :thumbup

No worries, dealt with that quite a bit myself.
