Why can't we just do all of this (cut energy consumption, reduce pollution, etc...) without doing it in the name of global warming? Why do we need some sort of excuse, as if it isn't a noble enough goal on it's own?

I semi-agree with you. We shouldn't need a cause to do all of this, but since global warming is a real threat, I guess they thoguht it would be prudent to use it as a motivator.

At the same time, to me and many others, it comes across as fear-mongering. We MUST do this because of this, etc...

i don't think its fear mongering as much as "hey, we're helping to fuck up the planet so maybe we should be aware of whats going on".

Obviously our perspectives are different on this one, I'm not convinced of the threat of global warming. But, couldn't they have passed this pact without even using global warming as the reason? I can't see how it makes a difference WHY they're doing it. I doubt it would cause an uproar if they all said "Hey, we wanna cut back our pollution and energy consumption".

Then stop watching FOX news. ;):jk

The fact is, its real. it has always happened, even before humans existed. Its a natural cycle (ice cores confirm this), were just helping it along the way.

I think its important to not ignore it, and pretend global warming is some unpopular, ugly child we lock in the cupboard. People need a reason why we're doing it besides "its good to do".

:homo: The USA is one of the worst contributers to global warming too so it's important that they should be seen to be leading the way!

Because we, as ignorant wasteful human beings wouldn't have ever considered signing some efficient energy use lower pollution pact had it not been for this ridiculous global warming 'effect'.

Yup, that would seem to back up what I said. It's not just power plants that are a problem though, there are many factors which contribute to global warming. Brazil looks pretty good from that map but the damage they are doing by destroying the rainforest is terrible.
Oh, I agree that there's more to it than power plants. But there's a whole lot of other countries that need to cut back. China's supposed to pass the US by 2010 in CO2 emissions.

Agreed! That's why I said USA were ONE of the biggest contributers to global warming, not THE biggest contributer to it.;)

No, the US IS the biggest producer...

- World 100.0 %
1 United States 22.2 %
2 China 18.4 %
- European Union 11.4 %
3 Russia 5.6 %
4 India 4.9 %
5 Japan 4.6 %
6 Germany 3.0 %
7 Canada 2.3 %
8 United Kingdom 2.2 %
9 South Korea 1.7 %
10 Italy 1.7 %

That means we produce more than the bottom 6 countries combined in the top 10 countries in this list.

Here's another one:
List of countries by GDP (nominal) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

We make 22% of the emissions, but we account for 27% of the world's production. At least we're putting our emissions toward something useful.

Now look at China. 18% of the emissions and only 5% of the Gross World Product.

Seems like they're polluting just for the sake of polluting.

Here's a quote from Al Gore, Mr. Environmental himself:

""Countries like China, just to give an example, which will next year be the largest emitter in the world, can't be excluded just because it's technically a developing country," Gore said. "When you look at the absolute amount of CO2 each year and going forward, China will soon surpass the U.S.""

What are you looking for Donnie...?

I agree that China is another huge problem when it comes to contributing to global warming... but I don't live in China... I live in the great US of mother fucking A... The best country on the face of this planet, where we can talk about this without fear of prison.

If I did live in China... I wouldn't say a word... I don't like prison. :D

Especially Chinese ones. They even did a number on Jack Bauer. :cool

I agree, any pollution isn't good, global warming or not. My point is, though, we're contrubuting to the global community with our emissions. We contribute more to the world than we pollute the world. That's a positive number in my book.

We're not just ruining the world for the sake of ruining the world. We're contributing to it on a scale that is greater than our pollution.
