The merging of the human mind and body with technology can be both scary and wonderful. I guess it all depends on the underlying purpose .

For some reason I was just wondering if Aldous Huxley's Brave New World has been pulled from Kindle yet.:willy_nilly:

no learning.

just using fear to attempt to stall technology.

Yeah but technology can't be stalled it just keeps getting better everyday and its to the point where someone can make something one day and it is outdated the next.

technology *can* be stalled.

fear makes you think it cannot.

secondly, better is a subjective opinion and open to opinion, which according to the video is exploited and in combination with fear, puts things into a bad light.

finally, making something one day, it being outdated the next is not true. maybe one day it will be, but then again, by that time, there will be more than just 'us' humans with 'intelligence' so that statement is also out of context.

as a side note: why is it called "the singularity"? .. what?!? does not even make sense?!

fucking idiots.

they need to learn, retain, and educate one thing: technology can only do what we tell it to do (or in this case, program it to do). therefore, it cannot make it's own decisions. on top of that, no one i know in the technology field calls their "children" "gods". it's a fucking tool. mapping the brain is to help us understand ourselves more, so we can fix errors in our "programming" (diseases, defects, such as paraplegic and such, and the like).

if you are too scared to welcome the future, then you have no part in it.

To reply to the end of your post, I agree slightly technology only does what we tell it to do, but think about what they were saying when were at the point where computers are a billion times smarter then ares, and that computer may be a "LEARNING MACHINE" that computer might treat us as if we were nothing. Does that not make sense at all?

firstly, who is ares?

secondly, it is a machine. it has no choice but to do what we tell it to do. the system can only make "choices" between what options we give it, that's all.

finally, it is a machine. unplug it if you don't like it. did it go viral? kill electricity. does it use solar? chop the lines. not enough options? use a gun. can't pull a trigger? use fire. don't know how to make fire, you don't deserve to be called human.

there are more options than they let on.

technology is nothing to fear.

Excuse me, I just woke up, I was saying "ares" but I meant to type our brain, What your saying is true, technology is nothing to fear, but have you not heard what they were saying in the video about having computers so much more powerful then our brains, That computer is a "Learning computer" meaning it can take from what ever it knows and learn from it. Now I'm not saying that computer will hurt us in any way, but think if we ended up actually become A more advanced human by implementing some kind of computer in our brain, or what they were talking about in the video, HUMAN 2.0. Sounds funny but don't you think a "Learning computer" could figure out somehow to use whatever would be inside our brain, to like control us in some manner.

why are you so worked up about the video?

clearly our brain is in control, as evidenced by the monkey's lack of movement, yet the robotic arm continued to respond to brain output.

what's different from you being controlled by your brain, or you being controlled by a computer? if you *really* think about it, there is not one iota of difference.

hell, our perception of consciousness and control over ourselves might just be a fallacy implemented by the brain, to fool it's host.

i could not care less (my brain's telling you this through the internet!! run!!shift+1!)...

I did not have time to watch the entire 48 min video, but I think I got the gist. I've discussed this subject on this board. I think the melding of technology to the human brain and frame could happen, in that we could become cyborgs. Why? If you can augment your brain with 100,000x computing power and your body with 1000x strength, that's why.

As far as storing you brain's electronic signals as a means of storing you, the real you, that seems less certain to me. Yes they are your memories, but if you stored them and then transplanted them into 100 people, that would not mean there are 100 you running around. They all might think they are you, but I think something spiritual is missing from the equation, something that makes you unique and not transferable. It's just a feeling.

I love it when I have no idea what to say to something, Other than, all of what I say is opinion based. I actually kind of hope this kind of things happen, and one day, Id love to be a cyborg.
