The Title of this thread is made in jest. Not an attack on Canada or Canadian medicine.

U.S. Doctors face Insurance Maze. So is this a big government issue, a capitalist issue, or a big Medicine issue? Who wants to spin this first??

Physicians in Canada, where health care is administered mainly by the government, did spend a good deal of time and money communicating with their payers. But American doctors in the study spent far more dealing with multiple health plans: more than $80,000 per year per physician, or roughly four times as much as their northern counterparts. And their offices spent as many as 21 hours per week with payers, nearly 10 times as much as the Canadian offices.

The complicated task inevitably gets in the way of patient care.
A young patient complaining of extreme fatigue, for example, might benefit from a $40 blood test that could confirm infectious mononucleosis in 10 minutes. But a doctor cannot order the simple test without first checking with the insurance company to see if it is covered and if there are any constraints on where the patient’s blood can be drawn and the test run.

Its a money issue. Your United States doctors profit from their doctoring where as our Canadian doctors have a set amount they are paid per op or appointment with their clients. Canadian doctors do not have the chance to make as much money as US doctors and nurses can and do make.

I think its more towards the fact our Canadian healthcare system is tax paid for and not based on capitalism profiteering. Most US people believe Canadian healthcare is substandard to theirs but this is false. Our wait times are less and our system puts people first over money making, which is what doctoring and nursing should be about.

Whatever the argument against the Canadian Health system maybe, we still have the facts that show our country is taking better care of its citizens. Our Canadian people don't have to worry about losing everything they own just to pay for health care because of the profiteering that the US has allowed their doctors and hospitals, etc to do.

The health system in the US is profit based not people based.

Canadian system is people based not profit based.

Which is best? I'll take caring about people over money any day!

I used to be in an HMO. It was really nice. I didn't have to worry about filing claims and everything was covered when I went to the clinic minus a $10 copay. I switched employers and the HMO is not available. I pay more for health insurance now and the insurance hasn't paid for anything yet.

U.S. healthcare is getting worse each year, both in quality and in cost, but we still think we are the best on the planet. No universal coverage for us, no sir. You can't get health insurance here, you're just a low life under achieving slacker.
