I had the misfortune of watching some British TV via satellite at my chums house last night.

The TV adverts were just embarrassing.

Honestly, who cares if there are germs in your toilet or not? What are you going to do, eat out of it?

There wasn't one single useful product advertised the entire time....

Does it work for you? Do you see and advert and think, damn, I want that?

I'll look at interesting adverts and think "wow that's cool" then just forget the product or just not care.

The last time an advert affected my buying habits was when I saw one of the supermarkets had a special offer on some baby/toddler items a few months ago and I went and stocked up. I can't even remember what supermarket it was.

I think it was Asda becuase I remember carrying a massive heavy bag + my heavy college bag + 2 of those massive boxes of nappies + a big box of baby wipes IN HIGH HEELS from Asda.

I sometimes think "That's cool" but I never really have any thoughts to buy stuff. One reason.

THE FUCKING WAY THEY ADVERTISE IT! THERE COULD HAVE GONE TO THE LOCAL MONKEY HOUSE AND GOT BETTER ACTORS THAN THESE FUCKING RETARDS!

I never watch TV, and even if I do it's usually this channel that only plays dramas or comedy shows, so most ads are about the shows or some random crap. I hate everything on TV, I pick it to pieces and like to correct the TV...

seriously tho, I was mesmerised by this advert for a toilet cleaner. The woman in the advert seemed so happy that her toilet bowl was germ free...

Is it just me or is that so totally ridiculous? What a waste of human endeavour.

Most housework is lol. I always thought my mum would get too worked up over the housework.
I do understand why the loo would need cleaning if certain marks were left in there :yuk

I rented a room off this woman whilst I was in Canada, and she used to spend an entire day cleaning her already spotless bathroom. AN ENTIRE DAY. I did the cleaning once, took me about an hour to do the whole house. She didn't notice any difference. I always wondered what exactly she thought she was cleaning as she was scrubbing her bathroom floor by hand with strong bleach...

Yeah, gotta clean the marks. But why on Earth do you need to kill germs in your toilet?! That's just insanity.

I think I know the advert you're on about, yes it's ridiculous.

Isn't it? Mind you, it must be nice to be made happy by something so simple...

I blame companies and their "creation of need".

have you studied advertising in Psychology yet? I remember that being quite fascinating. Basically modern advertising was born out of the ability to instill fear in people: fear of germs for not scrubbing that toilet clean, fear of alienation from not owning a good car or the right clothes, fear of being unattractive by not sweating a little.

I don't think we've done it yet but we might be doing it soon. Is it through conditioning (as a guess)?

yeah. If I remember rightly, it was first started by Johnson and Johnson. They had this by product, in huge quantities, and they took it to some ad guys (who had a psychologist on hand) and asked them if they could sell it.

"what does it do?"

"it clogs your pores so you don't sweat"

So they decided to make people afraid of sweating.

And so the anti-perspirant was born!

I thought anti-perspirants were a good idea though, they stop the sweating which in turn stops the bacteria from feeding on the sweat preventing the smell from developing lol. Or is this just bull? :p

Well, they do work. But before, people just washed. Water and a bit of soap does the same without clogging the pores.

Anti-persirants also stop the release of pheromones as well... my lecturer had an interesting theory on that. She pointed out that because we cover our natural pheromones, perfume and cologne have animal pheromones added, which of course tell prospective partners nothing about your genes at all. She jokingly theorised that this could be the reason for rising divorce rates.

Hahaha, yeah I've heard about that pheromones thing, ones similar to your family genes are supposed to be repelling lol.
I've always hated the women's deodorants though, I don't sweat abnormally yet they don't work, I have to use a sport one or 24 hour one for women, I just don't get it lol.

I use a deodorant but I never wear cologne or man-perfume or anything like that... :yuk
