Trial by Fire
Three boys jumped into a burning church here in Windrixvill. Ponyboy Curtis age 14, Dallas Winston age 16 and Johnny Cade age 16. The Curtis boy and the Cade boy were the first to jump into the church. They ran into the back room and made a hole into the back wall and the two boys lifted one after the other child out of the back room of the church to Mr. Winston. Mr. Winston took the children and set them down letting them run to their mothers and fathers. Mr. Cade was struck by a falling part of the church that stuck the 16 year old in the back breaking his spine.
“They just jumped in when they saw the children and I.” The principal stated as he wiped sweat from his brow as he looked down at the children who cried. Mr. Dallas Winston jumped in after Cade once the boy was struck by the piece of the building. After he had put out the fire that had grown on Mr. Curtis. They were all taken by ambulance. The Curtis boy suffered moderate burns, mister Cade severe burns and a broken spine. Mister Winston suffered moderate to severe burns when he went in that church to save his friend. In the hospital the principal stated, “These are the bravest boys I’ve ever seen in my life,” Johnny Cade died a few weeks after the fire. He died a hero. All of these boys are heroes.
