LEBANON, Maine - Two teenage girls sunbathing on a railroad trestle lost limbs when a train came upon them unexpectedly in this New Hampshire border town, police said yesterday. The girls were lying on beach towels on the trestle over Three Mill Pond when the train rounded a corner and began braking and blasting its horn shortly before 11 a.m., said Lieutenant Gary Fecteau of the York County Sheriff's Department. The conductor and engineer say they never saw the girls move, but their injuries suggest they tried to scramble away at the last moment, Fecteau said. Destiny Phaneuf, 13, of Lebanon lost her leg just below the knee; Rachel Brown 14, also of Lebanon, lost a foot, Fecteau said. Both were airlifted to Maine Medical Center in Portland. The girls were cutting class and enjoying the sunny weather when the freight train came upon them, Fecteau said. There was no indication that the girls were impaired by alcohol or drugs or that their hearing was impaired by headphones, he said. Phaneuf was unconscious when authorities arrived; Brown told police that the pair had fallen asleep while sunbathing, he said. The train crew called to report the accident when it happened. Police and rescue workers from Milton, N.H., were first on the scene. They turned the investigation over to York County authorities after determining that the accident happened in Maine.

And I live in this fucking state... I have to say I have no remorse for such blatant stupidity.

No Darwin award simply b/c they didn't die. ;)

Seriously, though...to sunbathe on railroad tracks has got to be THE stupidest idea those girls ever had. They are VERY lucky that all they lost was a limb!!! WTF were they thinking!?!?!? I feel sorry for the engineer, though. My uncle is an engineer and he always has trouble dealing w/ it when he hits someone. It's not like you can stop those trains on a dime, ya know???

I can't believe they did not hear this train in a timely fashion unless they were drunk/stoned.

Many years ago several high school students in Virginia, reportedly grade A students, after a little drink, decided it would be really cool to lay between the tracks and allow a train to run over them, assuming it would miss them. Unfortunately they did not realize the train was equipped with a a device called a "cow catcher" designed to sweep things on the track out of the way. So the rescue team got to pick up the pieces of their bodies scattered down the tracks. One stupid decision and another Darwin Award.

So...wait...two girls were sunbathing...in the middle of a fucking train track...and neither of them saw this speeding towards them:

And wait, wait...their excuse is they didn't hear a loud-ass train horn because of headphones...nor did they see it? Besides, what the hell? How does it sound like a REMOTELY good idea to sunbathe on train tracks?!

Fucking idiots.
