School defends drunken driving hoax

  • Story Highlights
  • School told students that classmates had died in drunken driving wrecks
  • Guidance counselor says officials "wanted them to be traumatized"
  • Many students were furious when they learned of hoax
  • School said it wanted to really push the anti-DUI message
OCEANSIDE, California (AP) -- On a Monday morning last month, highway patrol officers visited 20 classrooms at El Camino High School to announce some horrible news: Several students had been killed in car wrecks over the weekend.
Classmates wept. Some became hysterical.
A few hours and many tears later, though, the pain turned to fury when the teenagers learned that it was all a hoax, a scared-straight exercise designed by school officials to dramatize the consequences of drinking and driving.
As seniors prepare for graduation parties Friday, school officials in the largely prosperous San Diego, California, suburb are defending themselves against allegations that they went too far.
At school assemblies, some students held posters that read, "Death is real. Don't play with our emotions."
Michelle de Gracia, 16, was in physics class when an officer announced that her missing classmate David, a popular basketball player, had died instantly after being rear-ended by a drunken driver. She said she felt nauseated but was too stunned to cry.
"They got the shock they wanted," she said.
Some of her classmates became extremely upset, prompting the teacher to tell them immediately that it was all staged.
"People started yelling at the teacher," she said. "It was pretty hectic."
Others, including many who heard the news of the 26 deaths between classes, were left in the dark until the missing students reappeared hours later.
"You feel betrayed by your teachers and administrators, these people you trust," said 15-year-old Carolyn Magos. "But then I felt selfish for feeling that way, because, I mean, if it saves one life, it's worth it."
Officials at the 3,100-student school defended the program.
"They were traumatized, but we wanted them to be traumatized," said guidance counselor Lori Tauber, who helped organize the shocking exercise and got dozens of students to participate. "That's how they get the message."
The plan was to tell the truth to the students at an assembly later in the day. But word that it was all a hoax began to spread before the gathering. Tauber said some counselors and administrators revealed the truth to calm some students who had become upset.
Oceanside Schools Superintendent Larry Perondi said he fielded only a few calls from parents, and the PTA chapter said it had not heard any complaints. Perondi said the program would be revised, but he would not say how. And he said he was glad that students seemed to have gotten the message.
"We did this in earnest," he said. "This was not done to be a prankster."

So what do you think??? Did the school go to far or is it worth it if it gets the point across to the students??? If you were a parent of a student at this school would you be upset w/ the administration???

Me, personally, I think if it gets the point across to one student then it's worth out. Once cooler heads prevail, hopefully they will realize that there WAS a valuable lesson learned here.

For me personally, it's too far. My brother's girlfriend was killed in a car accident (no alcohol invovled) and I remember hear the news and how I felt in the moments afterwards. I remember asking my mother if she was joking. I think there are other way of getting the same point across without leading people to believe someone died.

I feel exactly the same way. "Students were enraged" is probably putting it a little strongly I suspect anyway.

IMO, drinking and driving is probably one of the worst things anybody can ever do. It's always the drunk driver that lives, and the family of 5 that'll never be the same.... :mad

Im on the fence with this one. I like the ideal i just dont like the way its done.

Theyre were 6 students from my graduating class that had died...all of them from car wrecks, only one involving alcohol but he was hit by someone else who was drinking. Each time one happened, the school was left stunned. I can imagine what these kids thought. Im sure they picked "popolar" kids that everyone new to some degree, that way more people were hit with strong emotions.

Thats sick and going way to far. All that will teach the kids is don't trust the Police. The're lucky that they didn't make things worse and incite a riot or something!

Who would riot over thinking their class mate got creamed in a drunk driving accident?

People riot over lots of silly things. I've seen plenty of riots over a game of football, let alone the police pretending that your friends have been killed.

LOL @ riots over soccer games. We have them on this hemisphere too, but I think it's ridiculous. What a boring game to get all worked up over. ;) :D

Reminds me of the 'Drugs' episode of Brass Eye where one of the 'sketches' was a young child at school being told her parents were dead from a drugs overdose, evening go as far as to set up a staged funeral, just to scare her off the idea of ever doing drugs.

I definitely understand what Peter's saying and I can definitely see where it could be a problem. However...one thing that hasn't been mentioned is the students that took part in the exercise. What was the reaction towards THEM??? Were the other students so relieved that they weren't dead that they didn't even think about it...or were the other students pissed at them for participating??? I would assume the students they choose were people like star athletes, cheerleaders, class presidents, etc. to make it more reaching (meaning every student would know who these people were).

Another interesting point...no complaints from any parents. Me, personally, I sympathize w/ the kids about being upset all day long...but they have the luxury of being told at the end of the day that it was all a mistake. The realization that it may NOT have been should be a HUGE lesson. I still say they went just far enough and I actually support what they did.

What if the "enraged" students do something in response, sort of like a protest, by getting all liquored up and driving?

Well then they're a bunch of idiots.

Personally I'm fine with it. We did this at my high school when I was a senior, and it got the point across great.

I agree; the people at my high school were slightly smarter - they just crashed at the party, no need to drive drunk!

:D

Then they're extremely stupid. I think I could come up w/ a better protest than trying to kill myself. ;)

When I was in high school they did the mock accidents every year, using the star athletes and cheerleaders. It was a good presentation and did make a point...but everyone knew it was fake, still. I think the way THIS one was done is much more effective.
