I still miss my grandfather. He died 9 years ago shortly before his 85th birthday. He was an amazing person to be around. In his 80's he could still swing a mean bush ax.

He taught me how to work hard. He taught me how to work smart. I learned from him how a single man can move a lot with a block and a lever. So many lessons he taught me about hunting and fishing and sports.

Not that technology is a bad thing but it's good to have a different skillset where sometimes simple, not techy things can be the answer to a problem.

Sounds like he was a strong man.

He never was involved with anything more technologically advanced than a TV or a phone. He was a farmer and an outdoorsman.

He had such a temper I often would laugh at him later when he lost it. They raised chickens for the eggs. There was a rooster who was notorious for sneaking up on you and jabbing his spurs in you. My grandfather was throwing out scratch feed to the chickens in the backyard when the rooster came up behind him and spurred him. My grandfather let out a stream of profanities and the rooster took off in a half run half flight. My grandfather drew back the feed bucket and threw it at the rooster as hard as he could. I watched the bucket and the rooster go tumbling out across the yard. When the bucket stopped it landed open end up with the dead rooster inside. My grandfather picked it up walked in the house and handed it to my grandmother. He said, "I brought home a bucket of chicken." Then he just grinned and walked off.

I was the youngest child and my parents had me late.

I was 3 years old when one grandfather died.

8 years old when the other grandfather died

9 years old when the other grandmother died

The oldest grandmother lived until I was 26

My one grandfather lived next door. I have memories of going over there daily to play checkers. Kind of. Nothing vivid.

I don't what I would trade though because both my parents lived a long healthy life. I guess you should just cherish what you had and leave it at that.

My dad died when I was only 7. My grandfather was like a dad to me. Taught me to hunt & fish. I learned my sportsman's ethics from him. He was a stickler that no animal whether hunted or owned should suffer.

He was an awesome shot which he let none of us forget. We had a dove shoot in front of his house and he walked out and sat on a bucket with his shotgun. My uncle asked him if he had enough shotgun shells. He said I only need three birds for your mom and me. How many shells did you bring? 3. Three shots later he walked off the field with three birds.
