This is a formal debate. You're either for or against the motion. No in-betweens pls. A poll will also be put up...please vote :)

Topic is pretty simple. More and more girls are becoming anorexics nowadays, and the problem is getting worse. Some people think anorexics should be force-fed, but others feel that force-feeding is demoralising/against human rights, and that it is only addressing the effects and not the cause of the problem.

what's your take on this?

Thats a tough one. I might be being contravertial here but if their life is in danger, yes. I was in hospital once with a girl who suffered from this and she ended up dying because of it. They should also work strongly on the phycological factors as well though and try and get them to be better balanced and get over this sad efliction.

I disagree. Force-feeding won't solve anything. You can't force-feed someone their entire life, so once they're out of the hospital, they will end up dying anyways. However, if you give them psychological treatments instead, it will benefit them much more.

*&&* In a case where someone is in such a bad state, that if they don't eat, they will die...that person will probably be in a coma...so the force-feeding won't be an issue, because they won't be conscious enough to say "No."

And just something I read the other day...if someone hasn't eaten for a long time, and they suddenly get fed...the sudden increase of the amount of phosphates in their blood can actually cause them to have a heart-attack...So there's a possibility that they might die from that

Force-feed? No, but I think other interventions are OK (IVs and such). But the psychological aspects have to address before anything changes. And a sudden intake of food could make a person very sick or kill them. But I doubt a doctor would do something like that unless the person was going to died anyway.

Force-feeding won't address the psychological problems that come with eating disorders. You cannot "force" someone to get better. You should be treating the cause and working through that, not just treating the symptoms.

force feeding is against human rights. But I think that certain people GIVE UP their rights when they make the choice to kill themselves slowly with a death by hunger. Just the same as drug addicts. They are put into rehab so they can NOT do drugs. What if drugs were legal? There'd still be rehab centers, people! And the people would NOT be allowed to do drugs there, whether legal or not!

I don't think people can be forced to go to drug rehab...ALSO...drug rehab isn't against human rights...it's not the same as force-feeding.

I mean, we don't force an over-weight person to have lipo-suction...it's the same principle.

no. they have the right to choose how they want to eat, or not eat, in this situation. it is not the choice of others.

thats my stance, and i will falter if needed...

Without the right nutrients, they would not be able to see why their mindset iis so wrong. I say get them to a minimum point of feeding to ensure they can mentally connect the necessary dots to get better and understand why it's so dangerous.
Otherwise, as harsh as it sounds (no disrespect intended actually) one can only hope for Darwinism, cause if they just want to die, let them.
