Needs more activity!

Come on, I don't believe that people here don't read, you're all far too learned to not.

If I, or others, throw topics out there about books - will you people read and contribute to them?

And another thing, I am always on the look out for new books to read, and I'm sure other people must be too. I know we have a thread somewhere on here called "what are you reading now?" but the most one can get from that is dozens of people namechecking authors and titles. What is needed is more indepth descriptions about a book, so don't feel afraid to start a new topic about the last book you read that you liked and would recomend.

Big Z, you need to just go on MSN more and we'll have wonderful discussions about literature, life and romance (in whatever order you want, baby ;))

I love to read but don't have the time much lately to do so. My two favorites being The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck (he's my favorite author as well), and To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee. Grapes is an amazing portrait of life during the depression in the US. Steinbeck just has a way of writing that sucks you into the characters...you feel as though you know them because you've met them; not just from reading them, if that makes any sense at all. Another Steinbeck I like is a novella called The Moon is Down. While it doesn't outright say it's the Nazi's taking over a Poland, it's basically that. However, the twist is how the townspeople, while being opressed by this horrible force, actually sort of psychologically get in the heads of their oppressors and wear them completely down. Brilliant book.

i'm having a hard time finding good murder/mystery books. they just ain't written like they used to be.

i used to like james patterson and patricia cromwell.. just to read on the bus, but i find i can't really get INTO the book until it's almost done. and then when i finish the book, i'm like "that's it?" instead of "I want more!"

any recommendations will be read. well hopefully, i'm only taking the bus for another month so whatever i can get through. one a week has been the rate so far.

Probably the best known and read books of that genre are the Rebus, Ian Rankin novels.

I have no idea if they have crossed the pond yet, but speaking as a person who is not a great fan of the genre - the Rebus series is pretty good.
