religeous zealots will tell you that god created such beautiful creatures such as hummingbirds, dolphins and horses.....well by that token did he also create such creatures as the african parasitic worm that gets into its hosts eye and feeds off it to its hearts content?

Best quote regarding religion ever...and pretty much sums up my feelings on the subject, "To me, religion is like Paul Rudd. I see the appeal, and I would never take it away from anyone. But I also would never stand in line for it." --Joel McHale, Community

Religion is all about picking and choosing ideas that support the cause, don't ya know... ;)

Even though this is completely out of line and off topic... but, why do we need this many religious ones, couldn't it be alot easier to just make one big sticky thread?

Everything God created serves its own purpose. Parasites eat dead flesh/blood. They keep the earth free of corpses as do other animals/insects. Just because people don't understand the use of something doesn't mean it has no purpose. Scientists are discovering new things every day.

I agree everything has it's purpose, but nothing is proven for a fact that God created it. And never will be.

The unanswered question is: who and what is God? Although science does not have all the answers it provides a more verifiable means of understanding our place in the Universe, than do popular Holy Books whose only contributions are mostly based on writings of unverifiable religious history. Science provides a method. Holy Books have no method and rely completely on you buying into the story. While science provides a means of seeing X number of galaxies, evidence of dark matter and black holes, the Bible offers up, God created the world in 7 days and then he rested. This written by ancient people who thought any time something bad happened it was because God(s) were angry.

If the premise is this is an omnipotent divine being who makes things happen with the snap of a finger, seven days seems like a long time to serve up an inhabitable planet Earth. And that tired him out? I'm a little disappointed. Seems like he has definite limits on his power. How does he manage the entire universe? ;)

We all would like to know if consciousness continues after physical death, but I'm not ready to grasp on to a convenient story just to ease my mind. And if there is an intelligent God up there who prides himself on his intelligent children, based on the evidence we have to work with, I don't think he/she/it would have a problem with that.

I always find the God vs science argument quite amusing.

Without an understanding of the universe around you you are only left with superstition, tales, folklore and religion. But as our understanding increases our religious views diminish.

A good example is the origins of lightning. Before we knew what lightning was and how it was formed, it was believed to be from the gods, Zeus. Yet today we are not taught that lightning comes from Mt Olympus, we are taught that it's an electrical discharge.
I could give hundreds of examples like this...

And the argument that science can't explain everything.... really? How is that even a point? Of course science can't explain everything. Do you have any idea how new science is to the human race? We have just barely got started in learning about the universe around us. It would be like asking a kindergartner to explain quantum physics...

Completely sound reasoning by a logically thinking brain. Just remember that religion does not feed on logic. ;)
