The USA with the invasion of Afghanistan basically says "fuck you!" to the UN and Britain and others pitch in their lot with America. The UN is a haven for tin pot dictators as is now seen by them flying the flag at half mast for a genocidal maniac. My MP's blog sums this up well. -

If anything shows why the United Nations needs fundamental reform, its' decision to pay 'respect' to the dead North Korean Dictator Kim Jong Il, provides more reason than many (hat-tip Guido Fawkes).

How the UN can mourn the death of a man who was responsible, alongside his father, for establishing a totalitarian dictatorship, incarcerating and killing millions of citizens in Gulag labour camps and causing mass starvation across the country, will be beyond the comprehension of most ordinary folk.

The United Nations should not be a haven for dictators, but a supporter of free, democratic nations. By paying respect for Kim Jong Il, the UN is condoning dictatorship.

Mind you, can we be surprised? An organisation which had the Gadaffi regime as head of its Human Rights Conference, failed to intervene to stop the Rwandan Genocide in 1994 and has hosted President Ahmadinejad of Iran (at least leading to a walkout by some Western Nations, including the UK).

You can read more HERE. To see Amnesty International's Report on North Korea, click on THIS weblink.

This is a disgraceful decision by the United Nations.

If the UN was told to fly the flag at half-mast even for Hitler, then they would of done out of protocol, nothing else

No it wouldn't be wrong...but I am merely saying is that N. Korea requested because of the fact that a head of state died while in office, they simply followed protocol. It would be the same if the President died during his term in office

:confused No, it was right to walk out on him, not sure why you would think I even indicated not.

I did not click on the link and your post had me confused.

The link made it clearer what the blog poster was saying as it included the bit about Ghadafi before the comment on Dinnerjacket.

The concept of a World Organization like the United Nations is a good one. It just gets mucked up by the players involved. Just like the U.S Congress... ;) Dissolving it solves nothing.

I think that at its best, the UN is just a place where all nations can be represented at the same time. It makes it easier than running between embassies or hastily arranging conferences all the time. I see it as almost purely logistical.

Other than that, I see it as mostly useless. Even on paper, it's flawed. All it takes is one nation within a group of five to veto anything that comes before the UN. Also, regardless of what the UN says, countries do whatever they want anyways. lol

I like the concept on the UN, though it has the same feel as the League of Nations a bit spineless when dealing with real issue like the middle east and Israel
