In your opinion who are the most influential directors of all time, and why?

The first two that come to mind for me are John Ford and Akira Kurosawa.

In my opinion John Ford was the pioneer of Western genre cinema. Have you ever heard of a movie called Stagecoach? It's a good film, but not amazing. However, it welcomed the most recognized "Cowboy" to the silver screen, Mr. John Wayne. Ford would capitalize on the beautiful landscape the United States had to offer by filming in such places as Monument Valley. Ford would go on to direct some of the most well regarded Westerns, and my personal favorites, The Searchers and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

In my opinion, Akira Kurosawa defined what it meant to create an action epic film. This is evident in his classic Seven Samurai. Have you ever seen the films The Hidden Fortress? The Magnificent Seven, or a Fistful of Dollars? The Hidden Fortress inspired Star Wars, Seven Samurai inspired the Magnificent Seven, and some say Sergio Leone plain ripped off Kurosawa with A Fistful of Dollars. You can thank Kurosawa for introducing America to the action epic.

I am sure there are several other directors who can make this list Alfred Hitchcock, Francis Ford Coppola, etc. However, these two men are at the top of my list. :D

How about you?

Spielberg- awesome story teller and great use of the camera
Lucas- Star Wars
Zemakis- back to the future
Houston- great, great, great story teller through the camera lens
Orson Welles-Citizen Kane

Fair enough. I agree about everyone but Lucas. I don't hate the guy, and I am glad he was able to turn Star Wars into a cash cow, but he doesn't hold much weight in my book overall.

Zemeckis is a great director. Did you forget to add Forrest Gump to the list? :D

I've always like Quentin Tarantino. Not for realism, but I like his style :) also JJ Abrams.

Tarantino. He made films cool to watch, without him Pulp Fiction would never have came to be. As well as Reservoir Dogs obviously.

Interesting story regarding a film he made, he started writing that in 1994 but threw it in the bin. Now this bin was never emptied in his workplace and he picked the script out of it years later and started writing it again. This film was to become Kill Bill.

Welles was pretty important, but I think most of his films are vastly overrated.

Such as Citizen Kane. Citizen Kane is a good movie, wonderful story, and brilliantly executed. I just don't think it deserves to be number ONE on the AFI top 100 list.

I'd agree, there's a lot of craft there. But I think there are better movies, with a little more substance behind them.
I know Welles always struggled against the studios for artisitic control, and I think that really hindered the finished product some times.

After Welles though, I'd put Kubrick.

Akira Kurosawa - For the reasons you put

Stanley Kubrick - A Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, The Shining, CLASSICS!

Lucio Fulci - The GODFATHER OF GORE, what more needs to be said?

I agree with all of those. Lucio Fulci knew how to creep me the fuck out as a kid. Example, Zombie. :D

Fulci is my personal favorite director of all time, I thought his zombie movies were way better than Romero's, I loved The New York Ripper, Don't Torture a Duckling, and my personal favorite Fulci film A Cat in the Brain :D
