The question becomes how much do the average people care and are they competent and realistic enough to judge? This becomes a dicey question in a democracy, because the democracy implies some responsibility on the individual. My understanding is that the founding fathers of the U.S.A. specifically created the Electorial College either because "the people" where too spread out to be able to vote in a timely manner or they did not trust the average citizen to step up to the plate when it comes time to vote. If you look at today, where the vast majority do not bother to vote, you could argue the people are not to be trusted to do their part.
