"My Administration is committed to creating an unprecedented level of openness in Government. We will work together to ensure the public trust and establish a system of transparency, public participation, and collaboration. Openness will strengthen our democracy and promote efficiency and effectiveness in Government."
~ Barrack Obama, President of the United States

Under sweeping subpoenas, Justice Department obtained AP phone records in leak investigation - The Washington Post
The aggressive investigation into the possible disclosure of classified information to the AP is part of a pattern in which the Obama administration has pursued current and former government officials suspected of releasing secret material. Six officials have been prosecuted, more than under all previous administrations combined.

In a letter to Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., the AP’s president and chief executive, Gary B. Pruitt, said that the Justice Department sought information beyond what could be justified by any specific probe and demanded that the government return the phone records and destroy all copies.

“There can be no possible justification for such an overbroad collection of the telephone communications of The Associated Press and its reporters,” Pruitt wrote to Holder. “These records potentially reveal communications with confidential sources across all of the newsgathering activities undertaken by the AP during a two-month period, provide a road map to AP’s newsgathering operations, and disclose information about AP’s activities and operations that the government has no conceivable right to know.”

Can't see any correlation between the quote and the story. Was the US government in any way covert in obtaining the subpoenas?

The government does bad s*** sometimes. The question becomes if you want to run the risk of the public never knowing about it.

I think Obama's grander of the great social provider is wearing thin.

Starting to make Nixon look good with their strong arm tactics. They took their Chicago style political machine and expanded it on a national scale. Sad part is the agencies are all loaded up with folks who are beholden to him and any investigations just get stonewalled. While the hype is going on is the scariest time as you have to wonder what new tricks they are up to behind the scenes.

This is worse than Nixon. Watergate and Nixon's enemies list were the elite fighting against the elite. This is wholesale intimidation. The machine that President Obama belongs to includes repub leaders. They are in almost complete control. These measures are to ensure against any grassroots movement that might spring up.

Let's be realistic, the same could be said for the Republican's last iconic figure, Ronald Reagan. Any president is going to put his cronies into office.

The sad fact is that most republicans who shout that Obama is abusing his power were no where to be seen when the patriot act was enacted under a repbulican president. I'm not saying that to let Obama off the hook, just that it doesn't matter what political office is in power, because power is what it's all about IMO.

You're right. And it's just as frustrating to see the dems placidly accept that measures of the Patriot Act *spits* has become broader stronger, and that Gitmo is still open.

Funny what Obama SAID when he was running for his first term about Gitmo and bringing the men home from the sandbox as compared to what he's actually doing now that he's president, isn't it?

Exactly how much money can't be accounted for in Afghanistan even now under Obama's regime?
