Wow, I didn't even know that there was going to be a Hobbit movie... It's sad though that Peter Jackson won't be directing it... He did a pretty awesome job with the first three

11/22/06 - Well, I've posted my preview page for the
Lord of the Rings Prequel that New Line Cinema wants to make, even without the participation of Peter Jackson. My take...? I'm not enthusiastic, let's just say.
11/21/06 - Although Peter Jackson's representatives may have been in talks with MGM (the distributor), talks have not been going as well with New Line Cinema (the production company), as we have bad, bad news ! This weekend, Peter Jackson wrote
a letter to the fans at the Tolkien site,
TheOneRing.net, which has since nearly the beginning tracked everything about the Tolkien movies. In the letter, Jackson details how negotiations with New Line Cinema broke down over his participation in this movie (and a possible "prequel" to LOTR that would be set between the two) because a long-running legal suit between Jackson and New Line over 'Fellowship' remains unresolved. Not only is Peter Jackson apparently out (with WETA possibly also no longer involved), but New Line Cinema claims to already be talking to other possible directors for the two movies. In many ways, Peter Jackson has become synonymous with the concept of live-action film adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien novels, so his (forced) departure from 'The Hobbit' and the possible 5th movie are undoubtedly shocking to most fans (the "undoubtedly" part is confirmed by the rancor going on at
TheOneRing.net and other fan sites). New Line Cinema cites the nearing expiration of their option to start production of the two movies they currently have rights to make based on Tolkien's works, but it's sad that expediency and legal issues means Peter Jackson gets cut out of the mix. Hopefully, negotiations will continue to bring him back in. If not, I guess we start speculating about who could possibly fill his shoes as director, and where on Earth they could find locations to match what Jackson and WETA accomplished in New Zealand.
