My final paper in my Com120 class is on Controversial Television Advertising. I have alot of freedom with this, because my instructor has indictated that I can take any stand on this, either defending the freedom of speech, or defending the viewers. I have an idea of what im going to do, but I have to be objective, while trying to sway the audience to my side?

Lol...is that even possible?

Whats your opinion on this? I know you all have seen some pretty screwed up commercials, like the car/cat decapitation ad, and the Paris Hilton burger ad. I'd like to know what you think about this, because an active debate here would help me greatly in composing my theses. (I have to come up with four to submit before choosing one).

Im not asking for anyone to write my paper for me. (this means you, David...smart ass)
Im just having a hard time coming up with references that actually help.

Over here in England we have to pay a TV licence. This is only for the BBC because they don't have adverts. Although it's annoying having your programs interupted with adverts, I'd rather have them on all channels so I don't have to pay for the overpriced licence.:)

So you have to pay to avoid the commercials? Maybe I misunderstood.

I wouldnt want to anyway, sometimes I watch TV just for the commercials, specifically on ESPN for the Partypoker and Milwaukee's Best commercials.

Hi everyone! How funny, I'm in COM 120 too. (Writing about controversial television advertising) Well, hope you all did well with the final! I have 1400 words now. (I'm not sure how good they are but I have them!) Take care, keep me posted on how you did, I'll check back occasionally.

hmm - so cal person doesnt watch tv? ... hmm.....

--------

as to the original request - i hate the "vitually ..." crap. also, the assumption that "everyone wants/will get ..." crap.

defend the viewers - the programs that are being shown are no wheres near worth the amount of money the advertisers are paying, for the content of the actual program doesnt even get 20 minutes, in a 30 minute block.

Yeah, that really annoys me too - BBC were asked by our government to consider having commercial breaks, but they refused. In other words, they make too much money out of us T.V. license payers, to change things now! Basically, they're laughing and gaining plenty of profit! We have to pay about £130 per year now. In the late 70's, was about £20 pounds, maybe a bit less.

Adverts don't really bother me too much - can always get the remote and turn them down, when the stupid annoying ones come on.
