Swatting is an attempt to trick an emergency service (such as a 9-1-1 dispatcher) into dispatching an emergency response team. The name is derived from SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics), one type of such team.
never heard of it until this happened locally.

I hope they catch the little fucker and send his ass to jail.

Prank 911 'Swat' Caller Says Shots Fired In Troy

TROY, Mich. — Police in Troy said a 911 caller reported gunmen and shots fired at a house on Friday in the 1000 block of North Lake Road.

It was all an elaborate prank by a teenager in another state.

Troy Police Lt. Robert Redmond said officers responded to the house after the caller, a 16-year-old boy, said four men were in the home with weapons while he hid in the closet. The teen said shots were being fired.

"We arrived on the scene under the impression that there were shots being fired in the home," Redmond said. "When we arrived at the house the mother and son, the teenager, just happened to be coming out of the house."

Redmond said the woman and teen were confronted by armed officers who ordered them to the ground.

I'd love to do this some punk who talks shit on Xbox live. That's some funny shit. Besides, they probably made the cops day getting to actually do some gun handling and shit.

Yes, this is all sarcasm. That's dangerous and a trigger happy cop could have shot someone!

They have done it here a few times over the past few months and haven't caught the bastards yet. Families have been traumatized by the SWAT teams storming their homes and if it happens enough sure as hell some innocent person is going to get shot.

LMFAO...really??? For the record, trigger happy cops don't normally make SWAT...IJS.

And in addition, being put on the ground at gunpoint is NOT the same as SWAT activation. In some larger cities (we're talking NYC, LA, etc) they may have SWAT respond on situations like that...but in smaller cities patrol deputies are going to go check it out first and only once they've either confirmed the situation is the same as reported or have been unable to make contact w/ anybody are they going to even consider bringing out SWAT.

This just happened in my area on or about July 27. Matter of fact this is the most recent one I was thinking about.

I didn't even pay attention to the location on the original article you posted...I just assumed it was the one that had happened near you. The article you mention here kinda eludes to what I said when it says that it is done "hoping" to trick them into sending SWAT. Different places have different policies, obviously, but I know of nowhere around here where dispatch has the ability to activate SWAT w/o permission from a team leader or a request from a patrol supervisor.

For the record, I am a member of SWAT and all our activations have to be approved by a team leader. Our team leaders are only called for an activation request once a patrol supervisor has assessed the situation and made the determination that SWAT should handle it.

You've really never heard of that happening? Sadly it happens all the time.
Never had it happen in the 11 years I've been in the business...but, like I said, SWAT doesn't respond w/o someone going out and verifying there is a situation.

not a matter of it being a prank type of call so much as the hacker is able to make it look like it is a local call coming in to make it appear to be more legitimate
